No contest at all - Kirk takes it hands down. I mean, for heaven's sake Picard had to have his psychiatrist...errr...counselor on the bridge with him!
And Spock beats the pompous windbag Riker at everything.

I did, however, like Archer - after season one - and 7 of 9 wins the swimsuit contest.

The main reason I liked Kirk though was Star Trek's positive attitude reflecting American positive attitudes of the early 60's - Next Generation was into the self-hating, always questioning, can't make a decision, love to engage in psycho-babble 90's mode.

Kirk kicks ass.
Janeway did what needed to be done regardless of the cost.
Archer was a hot headed cowboy but got the job done.
Sisko - too freakin' intellectual and ate up with those funky aliens in the wormhole.
Picard was a liberal bleeding heart *****! Should have been in the diplomatic corps not Star Fleet.

Sisko. He was promoted to captain mid-series.

Towards the end of DS9, he was really awesome. But near the beginning, not so much. When he did what had to be done regarding the Maquis and getting the Romulans to join against the Dominion, he became the best captain in Star Trek.
