Well, I'd say either a Mosin for sheer stopping power (zombie head? What zombie head?) but the AK for capacity.

Rifles are great, as are shotguns, but sometimes your gonna get caught by surprise, so what pistol/pistols are you going to have with you!!??
I will have my P225/P6 9MM and my Walther PP in .32ACP.

Im not much of a shtf guy. But if it happens, ill take my FR8. Im on the lookout for a AK type and maybe a P-38.

7-8 years ago anything 7.62X54r or 7.62X39 would be at the top of the SHTF list as ammo was basically nothing. My first mosin (M44) was purchased at an OKC gunshow for $70, I then walked across the room and purchased 440 rounds of polish surplus for $34. Samco had the Yugo SKS for $99 (wish I would have ordered crates of those now).

There was a time you could get a Chinese SKS and a case of ammo for $70-90. And, it was sometimes the old Yellow Box ammo.

I'm a big fan of the M1 Carbine. Small, not heavy and easy to manuver in a vehicle. A woman or teen could easily handle it.

The Carbine is a blast and just plain fun. It would toward the top of my list were it not for the surplus ammo being gone. Steel case stuff (like Herters) can be had a reasonable price but it can be very tricky to find. But wow, what a fun gun! I better take mine to my next range trip.

For pure shtf stuff, and keeping the cost down, it looks like the SKS holds on for the win. Clearly, the M1 Carbine would have been the winner if the cost differential wasn't so much. If fun to shoot were the deciding criteria, the Carbine would win hands down. Unfortunately, shtf and fun constitute an oxymoron.

Unfortunately, shtf and fun constitute an oxymoron. Thats why Ruger came out with the Mini-14/ and the Mini-30, but thats for another page.

SKS with my 20 rd clips would be in the bug-out bag. Mosin would be along as well. I am surprised no one has mentioned the M1-Garand. One of my favorite rifles. Mine would be in the jeep along with 3 or 4 full bandoliers. BANG! PING! BANG! Dead Zombie!
