Thanks guys for the replies. I think what I will do is use Milsurp's trash can oven method to sweat out what cosmoline I can and then use the lemon oil as AKguy to clean the dirt and grime out of it. At that point I might just use the linseed oil and call it good. It is after all a used military surplus rifle. It never was a "pretty rifle"..........

A hair dryer or heat gun will work also if you don't feel like messing with the oven method. Basically anyway you can warm the stock up will work. In my impatience I've laid them on an old towel in the car and let the heater run full blast!

I ordered one of these myself last night from Century Intl'. I like milsurp guns "in their work clothes", the markings and wear just make them more interesting to me. I plan on cleaning the stock as good as can be expected and depending on how it turns out I may or may not give it a coat of tounge oil.
So has anyone figured out where this batch of SKS's had been hiding? I read somewhere that someone thought they came from Albania or something?

For a serviceable rifle, go to the effort of getting rid of the cosmoline now. If you don't, it will make itself known every time the weather turns a little warm.

For a simple, easy finish, either go linseed or tung oil, or, if you want a hard finish, use "Tung Oil Finish" You can get Tung Oil Finish at Lowes, etc under several brand names. I put it on with a paper towel; wipe it on, let it dry and then do multiple coats until you get what you want. Use a very light rub with fine steel wool between coats. Really easy.

What were the prices on these? Not being a dealer I can't see the price.

After you finish cleaning the stock, I would lightly sand it, and buy some Watco. It is a stain and finish in one can. It would make the wood look new again. The stuff works great on the wood work scratches inside your home as well. Just take a rag and wipe it on. Wipe the excess off.
