Finished reading 'American Sniper" Chris Kyle Navy SEAL autobiography. WOW, what a story. I laughed numerous times, shocked and amazed many times, even shed a tear or two. Hoping they make it into a movie, maybe with his wife adding some from the ending of the book up to his tragic death. Reccommended reading on a TRUE American Hero..

We Were Soldiers was last one I saw. Even though it has Mel Gibson, it was still a good flick.

A couple of '40s Bogart flicks, "Action in the North Atlantic" and "Passage to Marseilles". I liked "Sahara" too. Also, "The Mortal Storm" with Jimmy Stewart and Robert Stack. There's also "Spitfire" with Leslie Howard and David Niven and "Reach for the Sky" with Kenneth More as Douglas Bader. He also did "Sink the Bismark". And last, "The Dam Busters"

Can't forget Das Boot or Dirty Dozen

I met a U-boat vet in Norman a little over 20 years ago,and asked him if he had seen "Das Boot."

He said yes, with what I took to be disgust. So I asked him if it was inaccurate, and he said "hell no." He said "It vas so real I could smell dat f***er!" He described what most of us would call a "flashback." He said they were called "pig boats" because they smelled exactly like a hog pen, and that after the first patrol the smell never went away, regardless of efforts to clean the boat.

There is a dubbed version, but the subtitled longer version is vastly superior. I have it in VHS, but will upgrade to bluray eventually.

I forgot one of my favorites, "The Enemy Below" with Robert Mitchum and Kurt Juergens. And 12 O'clock High" with Gregory Peck. For the Korean War, "Pork Chop Hill", also with Gregory Peck.

Ahh, lets see. . . one that I really enjoy is actually made in Europe its called "Black Book" it follows a jewish woman who's family is killed and their money and valuables are stolen by a german officer who does not hand the loot over to the reich. She survives and then befriends his superior near the end of the war. More of a look from the inside of what the dutch dealt with. It's in dutch and german with some english near the end so be prepared to watch subtitles. Well worth it IMHO though the kids may not want to watch. . . there is some nudity.

Otherwise some of the major ones, saving private ryan, Heartbreak ridge (kind of a war movie, they shoot at people) Dirty dozen (someone should actually be doing this IMHO) and U 571

I am sure there are more but those delve into the fantasy and scifi realm so I am guessing the spirit of the OP was based off of real events or time periods.

Inglorious Basterds and Inglorious Bastards. Two different movies, neither very historically correct, but they're awesome.
