Update pic this is it on the final coat of iodine.

From trial and error it is not good to mix iodine and shellac I had to strip that off.
I brushed iodine on and that took me about 6 coats to get it right the stuff dries quick and gets thick and pasty I had to keep putting coats in to get it dark and to to remove drips. I added 2 coats of shellac last night but I put one of them on too thick so it's not smooth I'm gonna knock it flat with some 220 tonight and add some more shellac.

Very nice...that's as close to looking original as anyone can hope for. After the shellac has fully cured you can hit it with some 0000 steel wool dipped in BLO and it will help smooth out the orange peel and dull down the reflection. The shellac should be hard enough to reassemble the rifle after 2-3 days, you might want to wait a little longer before taking her to the range and heating up the stock though.

Good job :thumb:

No plans on shooting till maybe next week end. Sad thing about it is this rifle may be going to a new owner next week end, I may swap out the stock with the new mosin that comes in tomorrow I just have to see in what condition that stock is in.

Just tried out a pine tar finish on the M44 refurb stock that came on my M38. Ended up using Tom's new Pine Tar Mix so the process was a little easier than doing a normal pine tar finish. Not as pretty as a Finn stock, but it will do. Now if I could just find an original M38 stock to replace it with...
