Wouldn't it be easier to have a revolver on your hip for self defense against bears and lions while doing photography? I just think it would be hard carrying a shotgun around the forest while you are taking pictures. Just my opinion.

If you are set on the shotgun maybe you could use dragons breath instead. I'm sure a bear would run away from a flame coming at him. And/Or get caught on fire and burn the whole forest down.

Ammo not to have for bear and lion defense:
Rocksalt
Flechette
Macho Gaucho
Pepper Blast
Confetti

Actually, just have a look for yourself: http://www.firequest.com/exotic-shotgun-ammo.html

FWIW, I do not believe in mixing lethal and less-lethal rounds in a lethal platform...in any combination. Familiarity, muscle memory, training etc...in a stressful life or death situation are you really going to remember to cycle out all the less-lethal rounds? Couple that with the fact that the effective range of most bean bag rounds usually doesn't exceed 50 to 60 feet. At that point the bear is already too close.

Avoid the threat first. There are host of less lethal options for dealing with dangerous wildlife...keep the 12ga or another lethal option available and uncompromised for when you really need to kill something.

That being said, too each their own. I believe Federal and ALS make decent bean bag rounds.

That's fine for black bear, but terrible advice for grizzly.

Actually you are incorrect. The Yellowstone parks folks recommend bells for grizzlies because most bear attacks are the result of the bear being surprised. They also say to make lots of noise as you walk through the woods to let the bears know that you are there. Grizzlies do not consider us food so usually plenty of noise is enough to avoid an attack. I've been working up here near Yellowstone for s few years an whenever I go walking in bear country I have a can of bear spray, a GP100 loaded with 185gr Buffalo Bore and I make sure to make some noise from time to time.

If you are determined to carry as many as 3 shells of non lethal shots before having a lethal shot opportunity, will you give your RV to me in your will? I don't mince words when I say that is a death wish.

never never never NEVER mix less lethal and lethal in the same platform. That is monumentally not good. Bears, mt. lions two legged drug growers etc will more than likely not respond the way you intend for them too. I have used less lethal (spray and taser) and it did not go like I thought. I was in a fight like no other after that. Took more than I had in the tank to put him down, thank god for backing officers.
I have seen dudes take bean bag and hydro rounds and keep on trucking. They are nowhere near as strong as a 900 lb black bear....thats just a black bear..........

Carry real bullets in your weapon of choice and hope you never have to use them but be prepared to.

900# black bear are very very rare. I bet he runs the risk of being speared by a unicorn covered in glitter as much as running into a 900# black bear.

However you do make a great point about not teasing or testing with non lethal rounds.

Kind of stretching it a bit with the glitter comment don't you think?
