I can only see the first pic, showing the center half of the right-hand side of your rifle. The three following images are broken.

Thanks. Though I can't be sure, the barrel date indicates it MIGHT be original to the action.
How can one tell the mfg of the gas cylinder?
The only NON-SA part I can readily identify is the trigger group....it's HRA.

BTW, are you the same "Perplexed" as the one on the CMP Forum?

Gorgeous rifle...I don't have my Duff book available to double check the barrel date to the serial number, but it looks like it is likely the correct date for that serial range. My SA was produced only around 50,000 units after yours and has what is likely an original 5/55 dated barrel. Are there any DAS or P cartouches on the stock? I can't quite tell from the photos.

Perplexed...is the park on that rifle original? It looks very similar to the light gray parkerizing used on the 60's era rebuilds in a couple of the photos (may just appear lighter due to camera flash).

It can be tough to identify the gas cylinder, since some swapping took place as a company ran out of GC's and another company sent them a batch, etc. It's also known that SA used the HRA tooling to manufacture several hundred thousand gas cylinders in the early 1960s for rebuilds. Having said that, HRA gas cylinders tend to have a slightly oily-looking finish compared to the drier-looking postwar SA finish. Also, the punch mark in the center of the stacking swivel screw (on the opposite end from the screw head) on HRA's usually is centered, while on SA GC's the punch mark is usually off-set.

As for the HRA trigger group, it's probable that it's not original to the rifle, but I wouldn't rush out to replace it just yet, as my sieve-like memory tells me there was some swapping of trigger housings taking place in the post-war period. If the TH is a different color than the rest of the metal, then it's likely it's not original, but if it's the same coloration and there's no evidence of a rebuild (additional P marks on the stock, etchings on the right-hand receiver leg, etc.) then it could well be original.

Yes, I'm the same "Perplexed" as over there :wink2:

The parkerizing on a M1, even when original, could vary greatly in color even during the same month or week of production, so I wouldn't rely too much on the shade of coloration to determine whether or not the park is original. Having said that, the 1960s LEAD rebuilds usually are a very light gray in color, almost silvery, while other 1960s arsenal rebuilds usually are a bit darker. One way to tell if the rifle has been reparked is to look at the chamber; if it's in the white, the park will probably be original, while a parked chamber - well, obviously a repark.

I saw that CMP is coming back to the okc gun club in april....but there is no scheduled times for CMP sales on their itinerary on the CMP website. Anybody know for sure that they will or will not be selling their goodies at this event?
