I'd call the seller and ask if he still has the old SKS receiver cover. Since he's had the rifle for so long, he may have been the one who changed out the original cover.

With getting all the ammo with it,it's hard not to want to shoot it. I can't see tearing it up to bad with just a few rounds. I did read that it does crack them but surely that's after hundreds of rounds not just a few.

Ronny it was my great uncle and he gave me everything he had for it. I have another cover for it out of a box of parts I bought once. I just have to find it. I know it won't be original but may be better.

Congrats on your buy. You have a 1941 Izhvesk SVT-40. There were three arsenals that made them, Tula, Izhvesk and Podolsk. Kovrov never made SVT's.

Interesting! Vic Thomas needs to clean up that section of his web site on the SVT-40, then:

The Kovrov arsenal also produced the SVT 40 in a supplemental role beginning in the later part of 1940 and ending in 1941, less than a year later. At that time the Kovrov arsenal concentrated on producing machine-guns and airborne cannon for the Air Force. The Kovrov arsenal is located some 260 Km east of Moscow and up until recently discovered information was not associated with Tokarev production.

Thanks for the pix, and congrats again on a nice haul.
Don't be afraid to shoot the SVT, but save the 180 grain stuff you got with it for a Mosin-Nagant. Get some light ball that won't beat up the gun as much.
I have a bayonet for mine. They're not super rare, but tend to be pricey. I searched quite a while before finding a nice one in my price range.

Did you buy your bayonet on the Net or at a gun show? I'm hoping to find something at the Wanamaker show. I think I may have to get a Mosin. Never been to big on MilSurp stuff but I'm getting a little bit of a bug for them. Been on SKS board all day studying and reading. Everyone has been very helpful. Thanks again guys.

They had a big discussion on that on gunboards. I had thought for years that kovrov made them, but apparently new information has come to light.

Thanks AKguy. Does anyone have a bayonet on theirs?? It looks like the end of this week we may get above freezing. Can't wait to get out and shoot a little.

The SVT bayonets are not cheap at all. I've seen them for around $200-$250. If you shoot corrosive primed ammo in that rifle please make sure you clean accordingly. Otherwise use new production ammo.
