I shot my .45 in L10 for awhile, and finally figured out the game was better played with a .40. I have a M&P Pro .40 to shoot that with an apex trigger and a speed shooters magwell to facilitate loading mags.

Production is the cheapest way to start with no major needs for accessories.

M&P 9 Pro or 1911
both are bone stock

Shoot your M&P. You can shoot limited with 3 mags for sure and probably get by with just 2 quite easily. You can also shoot it in Production but will need more mags. I shot my 9 Pro for awhile just to get used to the game using a $15 Bianchi dual mag pouch and wasn't really at any disadvantage. The M&P will run with dirt and all manner of crap in the mags. Let's you actually shoot and not clear malfs all day which let's you concentrate on learning and having fun. Just come shoot a few matches and you can figure out where you wanna go later, it's always best to do that rather spend good money to gear up and then decide you want to do something different.

Good writeup, Dennis. I'ma have to come over that way and see/shoot some with you. Is it the same as IDPA, you don't have to be a member to shoot routine club matches? Just show up, ask a few, watch a few, then shoot? If so, I'll definitely give it a shot... I'll have to pick and choose, as some of the dates clash with Oil Capital. :(

Ok, I'm curious here... why would you suggest Limited for a newcomer? I mean... this is the race division, highly-modified pistols, etc. If he's got a bone-stock M&P, and there's a bone-stock plastic-fantastic class, why would you encourage him to go up against competitors in the race class who probably have thousands of dollars in their special guns and thousands of matches under their belts? I'm just curious how a newcomer with an off-the-shelf pistol is going to fare.

You won't be in the same classification as the race-gun shooters. Everybody shoots together but, depending on the gun you have, you are scored against other shooters who are in your class ...

I'm with Shadowrider ... before you go spending a ton of money on a gun and equipment, shoot what you have (at a bare minimum you need 4 or 5 mags and mag holders, and a good belt and holster to go with your gun). Also, dry-fire practice is your friend. Since I'm not shooting anymore I have plenty of stuff you could borrow ... just PM me and we can work something out. I trust you enough to share all the junk (books, DVDs, equipment, etc.) I'm accumulated over the years ... It's just collecting dust here now ... I can fix you up like a Mexican bandit in a spaghetti western ... :P

Limited is the easiest division to shoot. You get full capacity with your mags which let's you focus on shooting targets without a reload every few seconds.

Production is actually pretty darn hard to shoot well. The good shooters in production are fun to watch, and you won't be any more competitive against them than the limited shooters when you first start.

Go into it with an open mind.

Yep, these guys covered it. It lets you focus on the fundamentals, learning the rules, scoring, safe gun handling on the move, stage planning, etc. It just kind of lets you get rolling in the game without it overwhelming you, it's just plain easier to shoot Limited.

To show you the contrast, I usually shoot revolver division and until I get an 8 shot, I'm reloading every 6 rounds at the max (obviously). When I pick up my custom built Limited race blaster it's almost boring. With Limited I just shoot and find a place somewhere in the stage to reload and I'm done. Easy peasy. With Revo everything is planned, every shot, every reload, every dang thing has to be planned out in advance due to the limitation of the capacity. That's part of the draw for me, it's just a ton more work. But I need a break every once in awhile.

Correct. You do not have to be a club member to shoot a match. Bring your gear. You'll be assigned to a squad at the bottom of the shooting order, so you can watch 10-12 shooters in front of you shoot the course of fire, and ask all the questions you want.
We have new shooters at almost every match.
