Coolhandluke your work is awesome. Wish I had the dedication to do this. Did you teach yourself to redo wood?

Self-taught, but not without a lot of research and trial and error. I've spent far too much time looking at stock refinishing and restoration threads on military surplus firearm forums. Probably the best resource that I have found yet is the sticky / how to section on surplusrifleforum.com..tons of great tips and info available there (see link below). The "how to do an aged oil finish" thread was used as the basis for the PU stock finish.

It is the Sedona Red oil stain with Tung Oil varnish on top. I went this route for a few reasons. Mainly for durability as this is the one I plan to be shooting the most. Also this is a wiping varnish and is very easy to touchup/reapply or even add layers if needed. And of course, because I like it.

I plan to eventually repair the original stock in a manner that is consistent with the original re-arsenal methods so that is looks period correct.

I like using Tung Oil Finish (viping varnish made by Minwax and Formby's) as well on different projects...mainly AK wood. I agree, it's very easy to work with, can be applied to a matte or gloss sheen, gives good protection, and it's easy to touch up.

Update 07/28/2015 - We originally suspended sales of our Tula's, Laminates, and Hex Receiver rifles when we had gone through all we could readily get access to , without digging through to the bottom layer of crates ( we would have had to move the world to get to them ) during our initial sort. We stated at that time that we may re-list these options if and when we found more after we completed our sort..... Well, these remaining options are now finally available.

I really don't think there are any plain (not snipers) Russian 91/30s that are still in original stock - they were all re-done with mismatched stocks during reman process.

There are some out there, just few and far between. And they usually bring premium prices when sold.

OK, I had to resurrect this thread as I did end up selling just the stock from this one recently. For the stock alone I got $150. That's more than 5x what I originally paid for the stock. (And also more than I paid for the rifle.) I decided I didn't care for the red so much anymore so I redid another bubba'd stock in different color and put that on the rifle. I also left it more of a matte finish this time.
