What's your barrel contour? I believe you need about 0.70"-0.75" at the muzzle for 5/8x24 and this probably depends on the type brake used.

What action is are you shooting? I would not use a machine shop. If they can't do it with the barrel in the action they need a barrel vice and an action wrench.

Don't stay in OKC just because you want to stay in OKC. Get it done right the first time by a quality gun smith. Jon Beanland in Gould OK is an excellent smith, give him a call or email. He's a one man shop so getting ahold of him may take awhile. http://beanlandrifles.com/
I just thought of that today, maybe that my barrel isn’t thick enough.

Those are pretty cool, wouldn’t have thought about that, but it’s definitely worth a look. If they’re as good as claimed, the cost of one vs. the cost of screw on + having it threaded, would be a wash.
At present I’m deeply considering threading them myself. I have several years experience pipe and bolt threading, plus I have a friend who has all the tools to do it.

So I was researching threading my Ruger American.308. Barrel is to small for 5/8 but I have read of some threading up to 300 WM at 1/2x28. Anyone have any experience at this? I would be running a dedicated QD break or flash hider if that makes a difference.

This is the shop that just did one of my AR's and the Browning Stainless Stalker in 1/2 X 28. He did a great job. The threads have zero slop unlike another shop that threaded one of my other rifles. (not located in Ok) He also has some amazing full auto's for rent. Tell him I sent you if you go that direction.
