Bring a 1911!
Revolvers are a great starter gun for a first outing, but from my experience once they get over being scared of the loud noise and unknowns, they’re quick to want more!

Oh believe me,,,
I'm not one of those who will put a .44 magnum in their hand for giggles.

I've seen those youtube videos where a boyfriend does that,,,
The boyfriends should be pistol-whipped untill they stop twitching. :angry3:

I always wait until we are almost ready to quit for the day,,,
Then I haul out Jezebel and fire a round or two.

Most of the girls have wanted to try it once,,,
One girl fell in love with it and shot an entire box of rounds,,,
Then moaned and groaned all next week with a bad case of Magnum Arm.

Last week one of the 20 year old ladies expressed an interest,,,
So we decided to take advantage of what might be the last nice day in a while.

She's a tiny slip of a girl at 5' 2-ish and weighing not more than 100 pounds (if that),,,
So I won't be taking anything too savory for her first time shooting a handgun.

I figure a good selection would be these five handguns:
  • Colt Frontier Scout (.22 LR single action cowboy revolver)
    • Just so she can learn how the cowgirls did it.
  • S&W Model 63 (4" barrel .22 LR single/double action revolver)
    S&W Model 36 (3" barrel .38 Special single/double action revolver)
    • So she can experience the original "Point & Click" interface)
  • Beretta Cheetah Model 87 (.22 LR single/double action semi-auto)
    Beretta Cheetah Model 85BB (.380 single/double action semi-auto)
    • So she can experience my personal favorite semi-auto action type.
      • You Glock lovers can keep your comments to yourself.
  • She seems like a brave girl so I might take the S&W 629 out with us,,,
    • Just in case she wants to let her Dirty Harriet yaya's out.

For targets I have one of those plastic/rubber/polymer self healing swinging discs,,,
It's 12" across and I can affix a 10" splatter target on it,,,
At 15 to 25 yards that should be easy to hit.

Anyways, I do hope the weather holds out,,,
I've not been able to get to the range much this season.

Wish us luck.

I've been on this campus for 20+ years,,,
I've never heard of this program.

If you have any contact information I would love to have it,,,
I retire in less than a year and it might give me something to do as a volunteer.

His name is Robbie Daughtery.

The team president was Mitchell Graf in 2018.

I’ll see if I have anything else.

That's great that you introduce some of your students to the wonderful world of firearms, BUT you might consider taking along another person so you won't be accused of anything. I'm not saying this young lady is part of the #metoo movement, but seems like a popular thing nowadays to ruin a man, especially one in a prominent status...such as a highly regarded and respected college professor.

Kudos to you my brother, just be careful. It's the way of the world today. Sad. :grumble:

Great thing you are doing.

It's fun taking out first time shooters. I tend to take fewer pistols, let them focus on a couple the first time out, expand the field the next time. Most of the first time is with a .22, they have so much fun shooting it I don't see any reason to move them up unless they just want to on the first trip.

I will tell you my wife's favorite pistol is a full size Glock 9mm and she is similar in size to the girl you describe.

Bravo for doing this. But, please don’t take the 629 on the first outing.

It can cause more scars than any possible benefit.

Also OSU has a great youth shooting/competition program. I’ve had the pleasure of shooting USOSA and steel challenge with many of their team members. I should have some contact info I can pass on if she has further interest in the sporting aspect of the sport.

They have shot at our range in Ponca City as well.
They have a great competition shooting program there.
What becomes an issue with some is that you will embarrass yourself getting into competition.
Totally the opposite will happen.
You will never find another group that will try their best to educate you to be better than themselves.
98% of us would like to win but are totally happy with shooting along side of like minded individuals, male, female, and kids for a day of challenging shooting along with the fellowship. The scores are used to see how far one has progressed personally.
Yeah there is some ball busting but will only be among friends and not new shooters.
Get out there and shoot some competition stuff. You won’t regret it.

Robbies dad and Robbie have been a member on OSA in the past.
Lonnie was dads name. Ran a mechanic shop in Stillwater and was a danged fine pistol shooter in Competitions.
Robbie inherited dads shooting skills.

For the record, Lonnie was one of the featured hunters on last weeks retro ODW Sunday outdoor program on PBS.

Well pooh!

I had to go shooting alone,,,
She wasn't at work on Friday so I asked her boss.

She was at the student walk-in clinic,,,
Seems she has developed a respiratory infection,,,
At least she did call me to let me know we would have to reschedule.

She's okay to work though and is back today,,,
Although she sounds a lot like a frog.

I had a blast though,,,
The weather was near perfect at 72 degrees.
Got to do some real shooting with my new (to me) Beretta 81.

I found one thing I will need to modify,,,
I must paint the sights with white nail polish,,,
They just disappear against any dark background.

I fired 150 rounds through her,,,
The recoil is much less than my 85 in .380.

This is definitely replacing the 85 as my briefcase carry gun.

And I tried to wear out my Ruger SR-22,,,
I have lots of odd branded ammo from the shortage,,,
I took this opportunity to rid myself of over 300 rounds of it.

Eventually I'll get it down to three brands/types of .22 ammo:
  • CCI Standard Velocity
  • CCI Mini-Mags
  • Federal Bulk from Wal-Mart
    • It's the one inexpensive ammo that runs all of my semi-auto's.
I started replenishing my bench stock as soon as rimfire started becoming available again,,,
I have over 10K of CCI SV, over 20K of CCI Mini-Mag, and well over 20K of Federal,,,
I'll be happy when I have 30K of each of these favorites.

Now I just replenish as I use it,,,
The good old days are back

I still have somewhere in the vicinity of 6-7K of Rem Golden Bullet and other brands to turn into noise.

Well she's all healthy again and we are going to try again this coming Sunday.

I really don't think she ghosted me,,,
Because all this week she's been talking about it.

So, all the guns are cleaned and oiled up,,,
Ammo and gear is packed in the car,,,
Cooler is full of bottled water,,,
Just need some ice.

I'll take pics and post them if she doesn't mind.
