I can provide the following for amusement:
  • .308 R700 in KRG X-ray Chassis, Argos BTR 6-24, 24" Sinclair M24 1:11.25 twist
  • 6.5 Creedmoor (soon to be 6mm GT) ARC Nucleus, Sightron 6-24, 24" Proof Carbon, Trigger Tech Special
  • 20" Criterion HBAR .223, Primary Arms 4-14 HUD ACSS
  • 20" AR15Performance 6.5 Grendel, Sig Tango4 4-16
Maybe toss in the .17HMR Savage for funzies.

And how do you like the 4-14 HUD reticle ? I'm a fan of PA's optics..

That's very nice. I'm not familiar with Athelon products, but would appreciate an opportunity to see some. As long as he takes Visa! I'd hate to come all the way to Ponca with a rifle, but not put a new optic on it and not shoot!
I don't know his business model, but he does it mostly online, so I'm betting CC is in his business wheelhouse.
I'll contact him if this happens.

I'll do the 100/300 thing at Ponca, just need to pick a date WAY early so I can request to make sure I am off. Although I should be able to work it out of if I am scheduled, as long as it's not Spring Break week(end) or people may have trouble swapping.

I'd like to do some longer shooting after that, maybe a few weeks later. I would be willing to drive over to OKC and stay overnight if we have it planned well and I have plenty of time to troubleshoot my setup and load up some projectiles.

Let's pick 2 or 3 dates and places, I'll do my best to make them all. I'll try to get my son into it, too.

As of right now, a 6.8SPC 16" RRA AR is probably my best chance for long distance? Or my 24" Wilson bull barreled 5.56? Which do you think?

Or should I build something new? :D Not looking to shoot 1500 yards just now, but 300 or so at Ponca a time or two, then try to stretch it out to 500+, maybe even pushing 1000 if it's possible with my very basic equipment. I DO have access to a buddy's .308 or .338 stuff, or he might even come with me.

.223/5.56 is easily doable at 300 yds. I've done some 1.5" groups with a factory rifle/pencil barrel MSR's at that range with my reloads tuned to that rifle.
It looks daunting if you've never shot at 300 yds, but after a day of shooting, it can get boring banging those steel plates time after time with semi rapid fire.
Don't overthink it. Use some quality ammo that is known to your firearm and work on keeping steady and working the wind. Wind can be the downfall at that range.
For a 168 Sierra MK (.308), leaving the muzzle at 2700 fps with a .464 BC, the numbers are as follows, with a 10mph, 9 o’clock crosswind:

Drift at 100: .75 moa (3/4″)*
Drift at 200: 1.57moa (3.14″)
Drift at 500: 5.06moa (25.3″)
The .223/5.56 is going to drift even more as a lighter bullet. So worry about the wind as much as anything IMHO.

@thor447 If you want to check out Athlon scopes, let me know next time you're up here, I've got a few...

Okierider kicked this off wanting to shoot his Grendel out to 500 yards and maybe further.

Without sounding snobbish (which I’ve been accused of), I would venture to guess most who will attend a long range ENS with a max range of 300 yards will find it too easy given they have adequate optics/peep sights. Depending on muzzle velocity and if shooting 1/2 or 2/3 IPSC steel targets, any type scope adjustment really isn’t necessary to get hits assuming a head hold. Even with a full value 20mph wind, holding off target 1 to 1.5 MOA you’ll roughly center punch it. If you dial adjustments to your scope, have a bipod and rear bag, it’s as easy as squeezing the trigger. Naturally, shooting smaller/round targets will make it more challenging.

300 yards may challenge one or two shooters, but it won’t challenge many centerfire rifle cartridges, especially Okierider’s Grendel, but it will still be lots of fun.

For 300 yards with a 100 yard zero most shooters will require between:
~3 to ~4 MOA elevation

5mph FV wind, ~0.6 MOA
10mph FV wind, ~1.4 MOA
15mph FV wind, ~2.1 MOA
20mph FV wind, ~2.9 MOA

Depending on optic, you can dial or hold for it.
