I have a 43 Long Branch NO 4 MK I that the forearm and front stock have been shortened. I think it was done by the importer. Has been my go-to rifle for decades. Anyway, my eyes are not what they use to be and I am really needing a scope on my rifle.

The question is, should I add a scope which also means a composite sporter stock, or trade it for something like an inexpensive 308? I love old Bertha Butt from the action to the safety and the old 303 has done everything I have ever needed and I have something like 400 rds for it, plus reloading gear, but part of me thinks it might be time to move on. What are your opinions.

You can put a scope on that rifle without changing the stock. I have one that has been drilled and tapped

Yes but for a lot of people it does not line up right. You can get a lace on cheek rest but I think they look tacky.

Keep it and buy the inexpensive 308. Sounds like the 43 Long Branch has significant sentimental value. If that’s not an option, then trade for a 308. The 43 LB has, it seems, lost its usefulness.

Sadly having both is not an option. I just can not decide if I want to put one of the ugly plastic stocks and a scope on it. I know it was modified before I ever got it, so not collectors value unless I put an original stock on, but I really like the old warhorse. I hate to part with it. On the other hand I really need a scope.

Eh, I think they look fine on the M1C and M1D, and it would have to look better than an "ugly plastic stock." It would be cheaper to find one of those and see if you could live with it; if not, I'm sure you could find someone to buy it from you.

Checking around online and the dollar value of these old No 4s is not high enough to get me a 308 bolt gun unless it is beat to hell. I will probably go with plan B which is sell my 22/45 to someone that will pay by Paypal but pickup the gun here. That way the wife does not confiscate the money for silly things like food, and I can order the parts I want. :P

Add an S&K no drill and tap scope mount and a reproduction MK T cheek rest. This was the combo that I used on the Savage shown in the photo below and it works perfectly.
