Ok, get this. In Williamsburg a Rabbi, who was a former NYPD officer and is a martial arts expert, is teaching self defense.... with hand axes. He considers them a better self defense tool than handguns. His rational for it is no one can get a CCW for NYC, so its impractical to teach self defense with a handgun. And if someone gets hit with a hand axe they are done unlike getting shot. I'm not making this up.... I thought this was a satire news article til I saw who published it.

Not sure why you'd think it was satire. Teaching self defense with something you can't use doesn't make any sense, and at most self-defense ranges, a tomahawk or hand-ax is going to be very effective in the hands of someone who is trained in its use.

Pencils, ink pens, tightly rolled newspapers, keys, etc an be very effective in close quarters combat.

Because for one, carrying a hand held ax on your person for self defense is also illegal in NYC. Second, unless you carry several of them you get one shot in a stressful situation and that's if there is just one attacker. Third, its absurd to say a single handheld ax is more effective than a handgun (something this "instructor" was stating), otherwise our police force would carry them instead.

The absurd part of this is how people will justify their position even when common sense says otherwise. Instead of this push to repeal the draconian gun laws of NY/NYC and allow the people to exercise their right to self defense.
