I have shot out of a tree and on the ground with a muzzle brake on my rifle.
Out of a tree: I mean find a nice tree in a good spot climb it and perch myself on a limb and hold still.

WOW the dust that the brake stirs up.. wind in my face along with dust and debris in my eyes and sinuses.
No brakes for me.

My dad and I shot .300 caliber rifles and loved them!!! I have NEVER had a problem taking Okie deer to mule deer and elk in Colorado. My buddies thought it was over kill when I hunted antelope in New Mexico with a 300 WinMag instead of a .270 and never had any issues.

My dad had NO problems with moose in Montana .

I don't hunt anymore so I sold them and gave a few to my nephew. * I cannot speak for the 6.5 Creedmoor as I have no experience with them nor knew anyone with that caliber of rifle.

Rifles I have owned and inherited from my father:

Late 1950's to mid 1960's..Weatherby Mark V (J P Sauer/German made)both in .300 WinMag & .300 Weatherby

**MY father knew THE Art Mashburn back in the 1960's when his store and gunsmith shop was in the NW 12th and Penn. area...before he passed away and it was sold but HIS NAME WAS STILL USED.

We had a few of his .300 Mashburn rifles and if I remember correctly....as a short cut....my dad would fire his .300 H&H to fire-form the brass to re-load it to .300 Mashburn...if I remember correctly.

Mashburn built two custom .300WinMags for my father....inherited to me...and later sold.

Original Holland & Holland rifle with the .300 H&H chambered caliber. This was a GREAT shooter and a unique story behind it. My dad had a good friend who took care of the DuPont(yes-the-DuPont) family animals and oversaw the compound/house in Florida. One year ..I'm guessing the mid to late 1960's...they had "Joe"(I'll use this name) come up to Maryland for Christmas because they had a gift for him. Yes it was that .300 H&H.

"Joe" gave it to my dad ..in turn I inherited it....then I sold it about 1990/91.

Then a couple of Pre-64, Winchesters in .300 WinMag.

All are gone....and I don't regret selling them or giving my nephew a few. I don't hunt at all anymore and my hunting guns are looooooong gone. If I did have any I'd let you shoot them and see for yourself if you'd like a .300WinMag.

***Look at the 7mm Mag if you get a chance** I had buddies that really loved them.

**If my dad and a few relatives were using our rifles on hunting trips ..I used a .25-06, many a time for Okie deer!!!!

Forget the wimpy 300 Winchester Mag. Go for 375 H&H or 458 Winchester. 375 is barely big enough so I'd opt for the 458.

OK, now that I'm done with that silliness, I'll go along with Dennis on this; the 6.5 will do nicely.

I went on a hunt when a kid in the late 50's with my uncle (only person in our big family with guns) before I was allowed to shoot with some of the Osage county ranchers around Hominy. It was more of a weekend of drinking and card playing, but they did go out in the feed trucks and look for deer out the windows late morning. Those boys weren't going to walk!
The only deer shot that weekend was a spike buck with a .458 Win. The solids just punched a hole but slowed it down enough he put another one into it. Bigger isn't always better.

For Oklahoma deer and the pure enjoyment of shooting the 6.5 is the way to go between the two. Your cost of reloading will also be less expensive with the 6.5. If you're hunting larger game, say moose/elk/black bear there is nothing wrong with bringing more ass to the party and the 300wm has more. In terms of sectional density, a 156gr 6.5 vs a 210gr 308 is about the same but with everything being equal, the 210gr "should" penetrate deeper.

My limiting effective hunting range for deer size game is KE=1,000 for a given chambering. I know this is purely a guess and down range performance is based on shot placement, bullet construction, and terminal ballistics. (How many people hunt deer with pistols/revolvers with a lot less and are successful?)

For my 7wsm that's about 1,150 yards with a 180gr bullet and,
for my 260 that's about 725 yards with a 140gr bullet

No doubt the suppressor will mitigate recoil and muzzle blast. A muzzle brake will just about eliminate recoil as well but everyone around it will suffer hearing damage. Lol.
One of the guys I elk hunted with in January had a brake on his .300 WM. I was shooting suppressed. When he cut loose right next to me, I wanted to butt stroke him and wrap that barrel with brake around the nearest tree. That thing hurt!
Tried it with my buddy's .300 Weatherby with a brake. Once.

OMG! :yikes2:

Was spotting from the next bench. Went behind him from that point on and spotted after the shots. That brake definitely worked. Behind the gun with 150 grain loads felt like 180 30.06 loads. Not terrible. But that blast was horrendous. .300 Weatherby ain't no joke.
