But then I'd have $120 invested in a $20 rifle that was still only worth $80....

I paid $25 for mine when Gibsons in Ponca closed. I should have bought the entire rack, but $25 was big money for me back then.
Decided to experiment and go for kind of a worn/weathered look. Custom mixed a stain and got this.
