If opportunity presents itself in East OK area, I'm considering purchasing some land to build a private shooting range. Looking for suggestions for acreages - how deep should the range to shoot safely? I mostly shoot AR-15 55 grains and 9mm from various glocks. Occassionally .22LR from a handgun.
What's the safe height and width for a backstop? Dirt? Sand? Which material is better for a backstop?
Thank you for any suggestions / ideas / recommendations.

Before you put down any money do some research. Go to the County Clerk to see if it is zoned for future development and visit with the County Sheriff's office to see if there are any restrictions to building a range on the property.
If everything is good to go, the size of the acreage will determine the types of berms one would need. I'd personally go with dirt because of erosion from wind and rain. Dirt will erode too but as soon as grass starts growing on it the soil will not wash off as easily.
As far as the height and width of the berm, the long range berms need to be higher and wider than the close range berms.
Always take into consideration the drop out zone behind the berm. Bullets that ricochet off the corner of a steel plate or target stand can travel long distances.
If you typically shoot in the evenings keep in mind where the sun will be at that time of the day. You don't want to be shooting into a setting sun.

Thanks Dennis for the additional advises that I haven't even thought of to ask! Appreciate it!
I didn't think much of the county sheriff's angle. Was at Harrah for a job; heard guns going off. My customer told me it's pretty common for neighbors shooting in their land for fun. I just figured it's because of rural area and made the assumption Shawnee might be the same.

I would suggest trying to find a place where mother nature has done some of the work for you. Large hills or deep valleys can aide in your design. Land aint cheap and you gotta get a long ways out to buy very much with out a lot of money.

I figured 10 acres in the east OKC / Moore is about 7k / 8k per acre? Looking at perhaps 70-80k for 10 acres? At least that's what my customer was telling me.
That should be sufficient for private range, isn't it? Just some family and friends.

This is getting crazy. Same Newalla; a mile north is OK County, a mile south is Cleveland County. Good that you point the county point out.

Many years ago I bought some land figuring to do the same. During closing the title lawyer found covenants that said no rifles or pistols.
Shotgun only since they were 5 acre lots. How much its enforced I don't know since I hear a lot of shooting going on when I'm out there.
Wife decided she didn't want to live there so, it's been a rental. 300 yards outside Tulsa's new city limits. The land goes for $15k-$20k an acre. 36th st north west of Osage casino
