I bought a chamber vac to get around this issue. I can seal bags of liquids. It is an expensive machine and very heavy but on the upside the bags for this type sealer aren't grooved and you can buy in bulk MUCH cheaper than the grooved bags.

I agree, I thought about a chamber sealer, but the cost drove me away. I just don't use it THAT much that I would get my money's worth out of it.

Once you have it, you'd be surprised at how much you'll use it. First thing I do when I buy meat is bring it home and repackage it.

I have been double bagging my frozen meat for awhile using ziplock freezer bags. Problem is some things are to long to fit even in a gallon bag. I was thinking of using the thicker bags I have to double bag those. I can use twist ties but that is not a good seal. Which is why I was asking about a sealer.

I used one at one of my youth deer camps. It really did a professional job. I have thought about getting one, but can't justify the expense yet for a few deer a year.
I have a food saver brand that is 7 or 8 years old. It does a good job. I cut up elk or deer meat and usually have no issue sealing if it isn't dripping wet. If the vac packed bag doesn't get damage (hole) from tossing around in the freezer it easily keeps meat 2 years. I just had elk steak from Janaury 2018. Perfect meat.

To answer the question about the bags. The bags my vacuum packer uses has "texture" on one side to allow air movement when vacuuming the air out. The bags are also designed to be sealed by heat once the air has been removed.

I expect mediocre results or even complete failure if using bags not specifically designed for the purpose.
