The chickens are kicken tail,, I was curious about weights so I weighed a few.. White rock layers, hens ran around the 3 1/2 lb mark, the roosters around 6 1/2 lbs.. The meat Birds hens ran around the 6 1/2 lb mark, roosters 10 lbs 3 ozs on 1 and 9 lbs 13ozs on another.. Very happy with these meat birds.. The layer flock should start laying mid Feb and the meat birds by springtime.. So long as a tree doesn't fall on them...:hey3:First pic layers all others the meaties..

I bought some white rock, light brahma, delaware and jersey black giants chicks last fall. The light brahma and delawares were originally a very large meat bird back before the cornish cross took over. I don't think I will be raising any of the light brahmas as they eat twice as much as the other breeds with the delawares behind them.
I also have some easter eggers, whiting true blue and cuccoo marans.

I had some french black copper marans but they were poor egg producers.

The meaties DO eat more, but then they are meaty.. We picked them for the purpose of raising our own meat chicks.. We've done the Cornish x 3 years now and they have a short life span due to the genetics.. This last year our order was pushed back a month due to the goings on.. I may be going in on an order of the dark Cornish with a buddy.. Link below.. These meat birds are sustainable and with my creative CL postings I think I can get them to pay for themselves.. This section we're in is what we're doing, not to mention the quality of our own raised meat is heads and tails better than the supermarket..

I'll never order another thing from strombergs. I ordered some feeders and waterers last year. They took my money and made me wait for months to get my merchandise. Orders showing shipped just to get a partial order. You never knew what was going to be in the box once you opened it . The only time they would show backordered was on the invoice inside the box.

I've never raised chickens before, but love fresh eggs. when I finally buy some land, I intend on raising a few laying hens and meat chickens. are they relatively easy to care for? feed em and keep the dogs away?
