I need to buy optics and a mount for my Tikka T1X. Should I get a mount with a 20mm rise over no rise? I've always been more of an iron sight guy. I have a 1-4x scope on my 30/30, and that is pretty much it for scopes. But, my eyes are starting to go.

For scopes was considering something like the vortex viper 6.5-24x50 mil dot which may be complete overkill.

I have a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x40 on my 22. I have a Viper 6-24 on a couple of my centerfire rifles though. The Viper is going to be way overkill for a rimfire rifle in my opinion, but if that is what you want go for it. My crossfire has the bdc reticle I have the mil dot in a couple other optics.

Depends on what you wanna use it for. On my 10/22 I have a Nikon 3-9x40 slapped on the 0MOA rail, works great for targets and out in the woods. I would have picked up the same setup for a 17hmr.

on my CZ457 I’m picking up tomorrow I’ll have barrels for 17hmr, 17mach2, and 22LR. While I want it to be useful for hunting, i also want to have higher magnification for using it as a really precise hole punch. I am considering a 4-12 vortex. Maybe a diamondback. I’m also using a 15moa rail. With an effective range of 150ish yards, I think that it will work well for picking out prairie dogs and squirrels.

My understanding (and I hope someone corrects me if I am wrong) is that you typically need a higher cant rail or rings if you’re trying to stretch out further than the scope will typically reach. If you’re trying to use a 10-30moa rail, typically you’ll be fine. Your short range adjustment/holds may be a little off. If you’re using a 20moa rail, then at 100 yards, your point of aim will be roughly 20 inches higher than a 0 moa rail. This affords you extra adjustment for drop if you’re trying to sent that little rimfire a long ways off and if you buy a scope that doesn’t have a ton of adjustment.

A base with MOA built in is for long range stuff. I'd think a standard base would be fine at any range thats realistic for a 17HMR. You can verify based off of published bullet drop of your round vs the adjustment available in your scope and the range you want to zero the rifle.

I've been a fan of DNZ mounts on my rimfires paired with Mueller scopes.

What’s the anticipated use of your Tikka? Plinking or are you thinking of getting into 22LR PRS matches?

fun :)

doubt they would let my 17 hmr into a 22lr match.

my use is putting holes in paper for now, maybe varmints given opportunity, and just me becoming more accurate, and learning to adjust to wind, bullet drop etc.

No need to get a 20 MOA mount for a 17hmr. At 100 yards zero. You have almost 3 inches of drop at 150yd, 10inches drop at 200 yds below chart is with 90deg - 5mph crosswind. I have a 17hmr its fun to about 250 yds then the wind really starts wreaking havoc on those tiny bullets. What is your budget for a scope and mount?
