If you're a hunter, it really doesn't matter as long as you know where the bullet tracks.

I agree, most shooters who have shot lots of rounds for a long period of time will probably know where their bullet will hit/track. But tyros, with today’s ammo scarcities/costs, probably haven’t shot long enough to have the knowledge of their bullet’s impact point/tracking at different distances.

Very true.
Over the years of hunting with a .22 on rabbits back in the day when I ran a couple of beagles, we typically used Ruger pistols on the running rabbits. At the start of the season hits were rare but at the end of the season hits were common because of practice.
We used the same ammo for consistency.
With the shortages during the obummer years, I have such a mix of ammo that I have to sort through the pile, sight in with that brand/velocity until running out and start on the next lot to rezero and start over again.
It’s shooting so I don’t care.

I follow the chuck hawks logic, but I honestly heard something today that makes sense.

bullets per yard: if you want to zero tour rifle for live game at 75 yards, you have to hit a pie plate 75 times with your chosen round. 25 yards? 25 times. So on. I like the idea.

A lot of the game I shoot with a .22 is a lot smaller than a pie plate. At 25 yards it all better be in an area the size of a squirrels head. That is with an off the shelf rifle and ammo. But that is just me.

agreed. But the idea is building familiarity and confidence in the firearm.

Grandad used to set an old Prince Albert tobacco can on the wood pile at about 25 paces. When you could cut Prince Albert's head off he would let you go squirrel hunting with him.

Another neat practice is to stick 4-5 wooden matches in the dirt about 10ft away. See if you can light a match without breaking it, Hard but you can do it more often than you would think. Both done with open sights.
Or, you can try to see how far you can keep a wooden croquet ball rolling with shots is fun.
Just getting to know your bullet path at different distances.
Well at least when we get more ammo to burn.
