Building your own stock

So I have a Ruger American Ranch 762x39. Love the rifle, not a big fan of the stock. I would love to slap it into a wood/wood laminate stock. They pretty much don’t exist. I found an article today on making your own stock. It doesn’t seem terribly difficult, and I have/have access to 95% of the tools needed. The Ruger American Ranch rifles have the trigger guard as part of the stock, but I can buy an aftermarket aluminum trigger guard. Aside from that I’ll need a butt pad, do a pillar/bed job, sling studs, and perhaps a mag well or way to attach my mag release to the stock.

Is this as easy as I am imagining it to be? Or am I in way over my head, and should just buy a howa mini action or CZ in X39 before I waste a bunch of money? Anyone built their own stock before?

You need to build one yourself, take plenty of pictures along the way and share the process with the forum.

ATTENTION: Not compatible with 7.62x39 caliber due to steel mag liner.

I have been told by many people over the decades you can't do this or that without a lathe or mill or some other tool.
Whatever!
I can build many things with common tools like a drill and a saw hammer and chisels.

Trigger guard is a no brainer.
Hacksaw cut some round steel pipe to the width you want the guard to be.
Then cut the pipe so it is not round maybe like in 1/2 to make a C shape.
Weld some flat steel to the ends of the C.

Not a welder.
Not an issue. Cut the pipe and then bend the ends to make the mounting flanges.
You can heat the steel in a firepit to make it bend easier.

Many ways to get there.
I will say an angle grinder with this attached to it will shape the wood in short times.

24 grit disc to put on angle grinder.
You could start with a tree limb and get there.
Those pads also shape metal.
Use finer grit as you go there.

You will have a LOT of hours building the stock from scratch. If it's worth it to you, do it. Or, buy the Boyd's and modify it to fit your 7.62X39.

I have lots of hours to spare. One thing I was considering was to buy a 90% finished stock, and simply do the final shaping, inletting, and finishing. If I enjoyed it, I might go for another project with a little more work.

Maybe a search online would find others that have modified it to work.
