Harrisonburg, VA – A Harrisonburg police officer was shot last Saturday night as officers were attempting to catch an escaped cow.

The incident occurred just before 10:30 p.m. on March 20 when officers responded to Edom Road and Virginia Avenue for a report of a cow that had escaped a stockyard, the Staunton News Leader reported.

Police said the cow had escaped earlier in the day and was running loose in the northern end of Harrisonburg.

The cow was spotted near a 7-Eleven convenience store in the 900-block of North Main Street a short time later, the Staunton News Leader reported.

Local ranchers tried to catch the cow but were unsuccessful.
In the process, the cow was injured
, according to the Staunton News Leader.

That’s when officers intervened.

A Harrisonburg police officer was shot in the process. The wounded officer was transported to Sentara RMH Medical Center for treatment, but then was transferred to University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

The officer was shot in the lower body, NBC News reported.

The officer’s wounds were considered not-life-threatening and he was in stable condition in the hospital. WHSV reported the officer was awake, alert, and in good spirits.
No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident, the Staunton News Leader reported.

Police were investigating whether the officer was shot by another police officer or by one of the other people who were trying to stop the rampaging cow, NBC News reported.

The investigation is being conducted by the Harrisonburg Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit and is ongoing, WHSV reported.
The Harrisonburg Police Department said the erstwhile cow was euthanized because of the injuries the bovine sustained when the ranchers were trying to capture it, the Staunton News Leader reported.

Or maybe the cow realized that concealed means concealed... :lookaroun

But seriously... happy to hear the officer's injury wasn't life-threatening.
