Pond hopping today south and east of Purcell. Customer has 17 ponds on one place, we hit 5. Largemouth, crappie and blue gill. Ponds were semi murky to straight up soot, depending on how high the ponds lay. Clearest had viability of 8-10".
Turtles galore (we poked a few in the eye) and one beaver, we think. Never got a good look at him, just swimming.
Beaver question. He had a hole in the bank at water level (6" diameter) went in and out and back in. No trees around were cut tho, so makes me wonder.

Muskrat? We have them in Ok. Beaver den should have had fresh cuttings around it.
Muskrats are a lot smaller than a beaver.

Possible. Never seen one. This animal was 18-20" long and used it's tail to swim. I assume a muskrat would have a rat tail? This seemed to have a thick tail ~2" wide. We were 20' away at closest point before he skuttled the ship.

Sounds more like an otter with a 2" wide tail. Beaver tails are wide and flat. Muskrat tails are round and resemble an opossum tail.

Definitely not a muskrat.

Have no idea about otter in your area.

No way? I said that same thing in my head but not out loud to my son. Didn't want to seem foolish. An otter in central Oklahoma?
Yes. River otter range has expanded as populations have recovered. In the link below, ODWC acknowledges the river otter is relatively well established around Norman.
