I was on a Flagship for 4 years and we had a 49 Marine detachment to protect the Admiral. They were usually bored and didn't do much but exercise, shine boots/shoes, iron uniforms and get hair cuts. Endearingly, we called them "sea-going bell hops".

My step dad was in the Navy. That’s what he called them too. He was a scraper in his younger days. He had a list of pet names he used to get them stirred up. He used to tell stories of bar fights with the marines.

Squids, don't you be be talkin' too much BS now. In my experience, Marines who are stationed on a battleship...for the most part, wish they weren't.

Over the years, I've found that vets from any service can trash talk any other service and smile afterward, fist bump and have a beer.
Not so much between Marines and Sailors. It usually ends up in the street outside the bar.

You are also not allowed to trash talk any branch of the military if you are not a veteran. But I've learned that you can get away with a joke if you present it as your navy buddy told this joke to your coast guard buddy. :rollingla
