Hobbes.... If you want 'handy' in a pump for bird hunting there's nothing handier than Browning's BPS Upland Special. It's a little on the high side for a pump but you won't regret spending the extra money once you've used it in the field. I've never handled a pump that was faster to the shoulder or 'snappier'. The straight english stock combined with the short barrel make it feel like it jumps into place. Remington used to make one called the 870 LW Special. You can find them once in a while on the gun auction sites. When they were in production they were a little less expensive than the BPS.

Youth 870 express gun. Short for hd, but long enough to hunt with. believe it is a 21" barrel. Fairly inexpensive. but still and 870. I picked mine up used off the boards for the $185 range.

Very similar to the Mossberg 500 youth model.

Not to change the topic, but I've noticed several references to the 20-gauge's recoil. I've never fired a shotgun in this gauge, but surely the recoil can't be as powerful as that of a 12-gauge??

No, but percieved or felt recoil can be as much or more. Most of the 20ga guns are built on smaller platforms and can weigh a couple of pounds less than a comparable 12ga. Lighter guns tend to kick more.

A buddy bought a CZ Redhead 20 ga over/under, brought it over the other day and we shot clay pigeon boy was it a sweet shooting shotgun. It's light and with the 26" barrel I didn't notice the kick hardly at all. I shot 3 boxes of shells. The guns breaks down into 2 pieces very simple for storage. For just under $800 free shipping at budsgunshop.com for a excellent made gun if your looking into a over/under shotgun you can't go wrong checking this one out.

I love my Dad's BPS with english stock. Its a great little gun. For the money a 870 youth model is excellent. I like the shorter barrel and with the addition of a slip on recoil pad the LOP is fine.

Lotta good choices, but I will also chime in for the Franchi 48AL and Benelli Montefeltro, for some lightweights. The thing about lightweights and shooting a lot of rounds is that a semi-auto can sometimes be appreciated over a pump because of recoil reduction, even in 20 ga upland bird loads, by the end of the day, if you really get into them. But of course, lots of good pump options, too. Really comes down to budget. I like Glocktogo's list. If you have about $1,300-$1,500, it'd be hard to beat the Montefeltro "Silver" for a purdy, legacy, functional lightweight.

I was rather fond of my cheap but highly functional old Winchester 1400 in 20 ga as well, before I sold it, but it wasn't particularly lightweight.
