Speaking as a guy that makes every effort to magage our deer herd, specifically for larger bucks, the gross score is what I'm looking for.
If I'm producing 150 class bucks, and better, gross score, I'm happy. That means the managment program is working.
If it only scores 120 after deducts from fighting, etc, I really don't care. I love a perfect rack as good as the next person, but would really like to see deer scored by gross score.

IMHO, scoring deer is like judging art. The impact a set of antlers has on a person is subjective; different people will have different likes and dislikes. It should be qualitative, not quantitative. In other words, measuring the length, girth, and spread on a set of antlers only loosely correlates to the emotional response a person will have when viewing the antlers, and only the emotional response really matters. A hunter can admire his or another's antlers without a "score". If the hunter referenced in the OP is proud of his deer, then that's wonderful and should really be the end of the discussion. I don't fully understand why it is so important to be recognized by a self-proclaimed group of experts that are using an inadequate yard-stick to measure "success".

ETA: and this is coming from an engineer that likes to measure everything!

I can understand where you are coming from MBB, but to have the World Record buck means there is some financial gain for the owner. Not uncommon for Bass Pro, or Cabela's to pay high dollar for racks like that.

Milo Hanson has made more than a million dollars from displays of his buck, and conducting seminars.

I read a story about him awhile back. To his credit, he has remained on the family farm, and is just as humble as ever.

I think what B&C is really encouraging is symmetry. True symmetry is very rare in nature - and as lots of studies showed, is very highly appreciated by humans (as well as animals). No doubt, beauty is in the eye of the beholder - however, SYMMETRY is objectively measurable.
