I have been on a call list at Byron's for a couple of months for some Pappy Van Winkle. Since Buffalo Trace is from the same distillery I was thinking of giving it a try. Any of you Pappy fans tried Buffalo Trace and could you provide some feedback?

Buffalo Trace has three different mashbills. A low rye, a high rye, and a wheat.

Lower Rye: Benchmark, Buffalo Trace, Old Charter, Eagle Rare, Col. E.H. Taylor, Geo. T. Stagg
Higher Rye: Ancient Age Elmer T. Lee Hancock Blanton's Rock Hill Farms Virginia Gentleman, Bowman Bourbons
Wheat bourbon: Everything Weller, Van Winkle

So while Buffalo Trace makes the Winkle, it's a different product. The closest thing to Van Winkle you could have is probably the Weller 12 year, or Old Weller Antique 107.

Buffalo Trace isn't bad, the Eagle Rare (which is the single barrel, 10 year version) is better IMHO. It's mellowed from the longer aging and has more complexity. I tried it based on a recommendation on this very board (was it soonerwings?) and I was not disappointed.

Well, I did drink most of a bottle of Jack Daniels Single Barrel today, not bourbon to me even though it was referenced as such earlier in the thread so I participated in the thread anyway...

Not bourbon, but really the same thing aside from the charcoal filtering. I don't much like plain Jack, but the Single Barrel is the tits.

I prefer the cheap crap (Kentucky Deluxe). I have found that once you get a get a few good snorts down, taste really isn't that important anymore.

I'm glad you like the Eagle Rare, but given you're feelings toward my precious Woodford I'm slightly surprised. Personally, I find the two very similar with Eagle Rare having more of a "boldness". That may not be the best description but I'm having a hard time putting my finger on the subtle difference.

Ah, I knew i'd find friends here. I too was on a crown kick, especially in coke or cranberry. However I went back to woodford, and since then I agree it is the nectar. I prefer it on the rocks though.

As for Jack, I'm not a fan. Admittedly I think I may have to try the single barrel.

Neanderthal, get yourself at least a pint of something decent, and after a glass of the good stuff switch to KD. Times are tough, but life is too short to drink only cheap bourbon.

I've never tried any decent scotch, but Glenlivet keeps coming up. Is it really all that?

Any Bourbon drinkers that have not tried Blanton's...do yourself a favor.
If it isn't the best you've tried someone (who isn't me) will kiss your ass. :D
