The objectives of Oklahoma Open Carry Association are:

  • To educate and desensitize the public and members of the law enforcement community about the legality of the open carry of a handgun in public.
  • To exercise a natural right to self defense using the most efficient and common tool, a handgun.
  • To demonstrate to the public at large that gun owners are one of the most lawful segments of society and they have nothing to fear from the lawful carry of a handgun.
  • To protect our right to self-defense.

Methods to accomplish objectives are:

  • To distribute information via email, mail, telephone and in person to local law enforcement agencies.
  • To have periodic and informal gatherings in public places throughout the state while open carrying our handguns.
  • To contact the media, conduct interviews, relate pertinent information on the internet, write articles and letters to the editors all on the practice of open carry.
  • To participate in larger public events, festivals, car shows, etc., and staff an information booth about open carry.
  • To stay informed of and act against infringing legislation.
  • To always be ambassadors of good will in regards to the safe and lawful carry of a handgun.

I can get behind your platform...with the exception of these 'informal gatherings'.

Do me one courtesy...if you don't live in my town, don't hold any gatherings there.

Feel free to do it in your own town or at the state capital, but the whole idea of non-residents strutting around my town in some kind of show doesn't appeal to me.

I don't know if strutting would be an appropriate term. The kinds of things we are thinking about are picnics in the parks and litter clean ups.

True, maybe a poor choice...but something about it still bugs me. Guess I'm just not the protesting or show-off type....good luck with it though, maybe you can make some progress.

Its getting pretty easy to spot the anti open carry gun owners isnt it?

They seem to side with the non gun owning citizens that are expecting to see guys twirling their guns in the restaurant and having quick draw contests at the convenience stores ;)

I dont understand it, to me it is the same as someone that feels that you should only carry in a shoulder rig, as they carry their weapon, calling someone with a IWB holster a sneaky thug because he chooses to carry differently.

make sure you all use a retention holster when you open carry, please!
We don't want guns falling out when you are engaged in day to day civic activities such as cleanup, etc. It's part of responsible open carry.

At least use quality holsters. Nothing says rank amateur like a cheap, floppy nylon holster, retention strap or not.

I don't understand why you need to use litter clean up as a way to promote open carry. You aren't going to make anti gun people warm and fuzzy by picking up after them.

I think open carry needs to just be done quietly and not made such a big deal of. No need to go to extremes.

When I open carry I plan to just act like it's just part of life now. The more normal you act the more normal people will see you. They can get used to it easier that way. Less in their face.
