I have the funds available to expand my gun collection! Woot!

I know basically what I want to get, and the list includes a Garand as well as some other milsurp, but my problem is that I can't decide where to start.

Mosins are nice, and my impression is they're probably the least expensive MS out there these days. Ammo is generally more available, yes?

There are a couple of VZ.24s available here, and I wouldn't be against any of the Mausers.

I'm guessing without too much research that '03 Springfields are out of my price range.

Enfields? I know little to nothing about them, other than they are out there in both .303 and .308.

So guide me a little. I'm looking for something I can shoot on a regular basis without going broke. I don't have a specific budget in mind.

With this stated criterion, you can't beat a Mosin-Nagant 91/30. All else will be more expensive to buy and shoot as long as milsurp 54R ammo is available. By the way, a Springfield M1903 won't necessarily be more expensive than a M1 Garand - it just depends on which model you're talking about, and whether or not a mixmaster would be acceptable. Either model will be several times more expensive to shoot than a M-N, though.

However, if you know you want a M1 Garand for sure, I'd suggest joining the CMP post-haste and qualifying to buy one of their M1 Garands. A post-war Service Grade ("good to very good") Springfield or Harrington & Richardson M1, when available, will run $650 shipped to your door. Their supply won't last a lot longer though - I've heard six to eighteen months - and once that dries up, prices will probably spike.

Thanks for the guidance. I was pretty much sure I wanted to start with an MN. Nice to know it makes sense.

I know I'm going to get a Garand. I'm just looking for a relatively inexpensive organization to join.

Russ, you need to be a member of an affiliated club. CMP doesn't have direct members. See http://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do=clubSearch for a club. I will probably join the Muskogee Gun Club, since they offer pro-rated membership. Garand Collectors Association. It's only $25. I'll probably still join MGC though.

Bob,
I picked up a really nice MN from Classic. It is the hex receiver and has Tula markings on it for $169. I am VERY pleased with the rifle and you know that can be hard for me to say.

I've got an email in to MGC. I just missed their October meeting, so won't be able to join until November meeting. I know realistically three weeks isn't going to make a difference between getting and not getting a Garand, but it's an extra three weeks to wait.
