(...when I first clicked 'shoot to kill' earlier, I was only the 2nd vote...).

I say that if you ever have to point a firearm and shoot at someone, for whatever reason, then you have to know deep in your mind and heart that that one bullet, no matter the calibre, has the potential to kill them. People die all the time from one freak shot from a supposed lowly .380 or .22. Most of us here dont leave the house or even just walk around the house for that matter with less than 9mm.

You may want to believe that youre going to stop them. But you have no control once that bullet leaves that barrel. If you have no choice other than pointing that weapon and pulling that trigger then you are shooting at them with a chance of killing them. Saying I will shoot to stop a threat is all well and good for some but just not very realistic to me. I am either going to: miss them completely, hit them and wound them and actually do the job of stopping them from harming any one until the authorities arrive, or kill them. Pretty simple. I just cant say with any certainty that I am not going to kill someone by shooting them with my 9mm, my calibre of choice, that all I am going to do is stop them.

What I want does not figure in the equation. Its up to physics. Im intelligent enough to know that my firearm is a potentially deadly weapon. Therefore I can only honestly say that if things have been brought to the point where my only alternative is to shoot at another human being with a firearm, then I will be shooting to kill.

If things got to the point that I was in a situation where I couldnt box or knife my way out of a deadly encounter and had to pull my weapon and shoot someone, then its already a serious enough situation where I dont care if I stop them or do kill them. I just want the situation to end. I wouldnt ever want to have to live with someones picture in my mind knowing I ended their fun on this planet. But if it came down to my life or theirs I like living here too and will protect myself and my family best as I know how. I just cant predict with any certainty that I am going to merely just stop someone from hurting someone by shooting them with a gun- an object that has a high potential to cause deadly harm.

Chances are if some sorry sack of **** is coming at me with a knife or a gun then he has the intent to kill me so if it comes down to him or me or him and my family then I will do what I can to take him out first and if he happens to die from being shot with my 44 or 45 then so be it. Same goes if they come into my house uninvited they will get 44, 45 or 12ga.

The law enforcement/private securiety training I've had, probably 10 yes ago now, you are supposed to shoot to make the person who is a threat stop doing what they are doing. The amounts of shots and placement depends on the situations. If you voted shoot to kill, you probably don't have enough respect for human life to be carrying/owning a gun. That being said I won't say someone is right or wrong because of something that the did or did not do in a "fog of war" type situation.

I have no respect for anybody who intends to kill me or a member of my family. If someone is not willing to kill to keep from getting killed THEY should not be carrying a gun to defend themselves.. If I am by myself and the situation turns bad I will do anything I can before using my gun but if my wife or my kids are there and in danger then I will defend them.

Options 1 and 2 are the same thing. Shooting to kill is the most effective way of shooting to stop. Aim center mass and then shoot them to the ground is the go-to approach, but if you have the drop on them and/or time to aim more carefully, the head is even better.

Concur. However they stop is good with me, but I shall use the word stop to slow the 'crats.

I CCW either a .45 or .40 ACP 24/7. If someone gets hit in the vitals he will no longer be an issue of concern as chances are 99% he is dead meat. Problem resolved.

That's not correct. Either round is effective if it hits in the right area of the torso. There are too many true story's, of people shot with either multiple times that have survived.

Everybody's talking like the primary threat is potentially a deranged individual armed with a knife or something. A lot of people get robbed, by multiple assailants. Usually one of the two is the leader, and the other is the follower. The leader is armed with a handgun, and the subordinate often is not. Let's say you're confronted in the parking lot at night. You give them your decoy billfold loaded with ones. But it's not enough. They want to have some fun. A million dollars wouldn't buy you out of this. When the fun starts, you put a stop to it. One was armed, the other wasn't.
