Re: buying a used firearm
Just be careful!! Armslist is like Craigslist only worse. There have been two instances in Stillwater where people have sold guns and been paid with counterfeit money. The guys were out the gun and money. Take a friend. At a minimum write down the tag number of the person's car they are driving. Go to Wally World or Staples and get one of those counterfeit detecting pens. Look at each bill to make sure it hasn't been "washed*" or "sprayed**"

*washed- Bad guy takes a real $1 bill, washes off the ink and reprints it as a $20 or $100. This bill will pass the pen test because they are using real currency!!!
**sprayed- Bad guy prints money on plain paper, then sprays the bill with hairspray or scotch guard. This bill will also pass the pen test!!!

Giving counterfeit money...damn! I think I would skip local pd and contact OSBI on that, that's a federal offense and they can either handle it or direct you elsewhere. I always carry one of those test pens on a big transaction, but I don't know if I would have for $400. The pens are beatable, but if the pen beats it, more than likely you will end up spending it somewhere else never knowing it was a fake.

There is definitely scum on this rock of a planet.

No kidding ... :grumble:

Man, Mr. Parker ... I am sorry to hear that. I don't remember the last time I did a deal with anyone who was not a very well established member here (well, except for Mr. Glock and he doesn't count ... :wink2:) but GC does deals from time to time on Armslist ... Thanks for the heads up about what happened. I'd bet you a donut and cup of coffee you aren't the only one this guy is buying guns from ...

What's the alternative to accepting cash? Or how can you make sure what you're getting is the "right" cash or real cash?

Taking a check is a bad idea... I suppose I could ask them to get a money order or cashier's check and bring it to the meet? If there are counterfeiting ways to get around the pen, then that's not safe...

What do you guys think? I don't sell, really, so I guess I shouldn't worry TOO much about it, but I'm just curious. What's the best way to avoid getting burned?

Yes the pen is crap. Look for tiny red and blue synthetic fibers on the bill. They'll look like pocket lint, but will be woven into the bill. Most fakes are easy to spot, "super-bills" are another animal. They're essentially 100% real just printed in other countries.

Stay away from bills that smell like bleach or fireworks. Never take anything larger than a $5 in change at sonic.

edit* the colored fibers are on all bills

Here is a photo of the new 100 dollar bill. Notice my crude black circle I drew. Inside that circle is a slit, it has a slit on top and on bottom. You can take a knife and it will lift up on top and bottom. This is bullet proof test that a Banker buddy showed me in lieu of the Pen.

When I Sell/Buy a firearm to/from individuals a make a receipt or bill of sale, where I get Name and Drivers License # of the individual. If I don't get that information the transaction doesn't take place. Now after reading this thread I might make a note on make/model/plate of the vehicle driven at the time.

Even on here I wont deal with newer members. Get the 20 posts and minimum time.

They better have a whole lot more than that for me to do business with them. I can get online and make 20 posts in a day. This is a side forum I use, and with my post count, I'd be hesitant to do business with myself. Unless I'd met the individual or the like...

Ive bought from a high post count member that sold me a gun with a broken trigger. The trigger was the only thing that was broken, I didnt pull the trigger till I got home. So its something I should have caught at the FTF. ( I didnt pull the trigger since I was still recovering from a ND, whole other thread.) I still feel I got a decent deal after sending it in for repairs that was covered by warranty - shipping. I wish the member would of been up front about it. I remember they posted its condition as 98%. I guess the trigger was the 2%. Most of my transaction and encounters with OSA members have been A+++++! My policy when dealing with people you dont know is CYA.
