Got a spare Burris scout scope floating around the loading bench. It used to live on an M1A scout, until the old man's eyes needed a little more help than 8X. :) It worked great though, he swore by it.

Leupold 2.25x or Burris 2.5x. They have the best glass. Top loading isn't the only benefit of the scout setup -- as was mentioned, fast target acquisition and shooting, ease of use on moving targets, and good peripheral vision are the main reasons Cooper advocated it.

I put a 4x Burris pistol scope on mine and it has worked very well. Bought it used off eBay for around 150 I think. I like the forward mounted scope concept. Makes fast target acquisition. Just took me some practice to shoot with both eyes open.
