Great list indeed, and pretty close to what I have planned. I cannot cut down all the blackjacks because that is all I will have after the cedars. After the cedars I take out some blackjacks and replace them with fruit/nut bearing trees. I don't know if I will do the heifers right off the bat, or if ever. There is no pasture land other than the back yard and that's only approx. 30 sqyds at the moment. I did have an OSA member PM me the following information that I have been digesting and it was so good I asked that member if I could share it for the benefit of anyone else that is following the thread for themselves.

Google a few of the following
Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholemew
Permaculture
Hugelkulture
Bio intensive Gardening
Aquaponics
Joel Salitin book Pastured Poultry Profits
The Survival Podcast (many podcasts on gardening and permaculture)

This guy has some good huglekulture info in his videos!

I would print some pics off of google earth and make a master plan. Take some time to figure out exactly what you want. I'm kind of looking into permaculture type stuff. Survival podcast site has some good info and links.

you can do a ton on 5 acres. there are many many many books on square foot gardening. the backyard Homestead is a fantastic book that gives you layouts for plans on as little as a quarter of an acre. With the proper care you can absolutely thrive on 5 acres.

also look into smaller cattle such as Zebu or Dexter. Don't let any fools tell you the meat is not good. No the steaks are not as big but if you get alot of Hamburger you cannot tell the difference between a zebu and an angus. The Zebus are the ones I have experience with, they can do excellent on a small parcel of land, They do not eat as much as a full sized cow, their poo makes excellent compost because it decomposes extremely quick. We had two on about a .3 acre fenced area for over 2 years and they did not destroy the grass, it actually had to be mowed a couple of times.

On a side;

I set up a program for some guys at work who wanted some beef.
They invest $6000 for 4 years.
In 1 year they get $1500 and a market steer for home freezer.
Year 2, 3, and 4 repeat.
After 4 years they have the original investment back and have 4 steers in the freezer.

I take care of pasture and cattle, they do nothing: unless they just want to come out and help, which 1 has. He is looking at 5 acres and plans on raising his own.

I give u 6k and u give me 1500 a yr cash back and a market steer? I assume at least 500 weight stocker calf or are u talking market feed steer like 800 plus?. How many can you handle and you got pics?

I take the money and buy heifers. Raise calves to approx 500-800# depending on birth dates. The exact 1 yr date will vary due to making those calves market ready. 1 calf will be sold to generate the $1500 and the other can by sold or butchered. Repeat 3 more times. To generate $6000 plus a steer to butcher each of the 4 yrs.

I keep the original heifers.

Anybody interested can PM me.

Interesting proposition. I have 5 fenced acres with a pond that I am not using for anything. I just let the Amish bail the hay to keep the fire danger down and keep it cleared. Unfortunately I most likely live way too far away to consider this, being East of Tulsa but it certainly would be something to think about. We like beef.

It is mostly for city dwellers or those who are not where they can oversee. All you do is put the money. I buy the cows and raise. Then you come get your beef or I sell both and mail you the check.
