Ok. I'll take that as an explanation... so... why not just race on a track, then??? I mean, I'm just curious.

Because these are true street cars, they are daily driven and perfectly street legal. Their is no prep to roads they race on, and they are all driven out there and driven home when done, track cars can't do that. :burnout:

As said above, the cars you see on the show are street driven, at least some of the time. Drag cars, on the other hand, are built to perform on a dragstrip, which in turn, is designed to help high horsepower cars get the traction necessary to make a quick pass. Purpose built drag cars rarely do well on unprepared streets because, again, they are built to perform on a track that was purpose built to accommodate them. Getting high performance vehicles to "hook up" (ie, get traction) on the street is an art and a science in itself. Too much horsepower and the tires simply spin and go up in smoke; too little horsepower and you get outrun. Those guys know that there are quicker and faster cars (both "street" cars and drag cars) around the country, any one of which would give them a thrashing on a well-prepared dragstrip. The challenge they make is that their cars are among the fastest around on ordinary city streets.

They race on a closed street, with permits, security, EMT's, Fire dept, etc. My buddy is going to be on the show this year. The guy arrested is/was a wannabe idiot. If memory serves me right, he didn't even have his own car

That pretty much sums it up. You can tell it's bogus, but I still watch.

Granted I haven't watched many episodes but the ones I have seen nearly all the cars are trailered to the location. Plus I've seen on Hwy 81 just north of Union City where they've filmed at least one episode and there is no doubt UCPD had that highway closed and detoured during filming. "Reality" TV.

I know one of the guys personally. Have done photoshoots with his car and models. Thing is this has been going on for over a decade under the radar. I used to work with guys that did this every weekend. Someone just figured out how to do it and make commercialized money off it. There are thieves in every group of people (gun enthusiasts as well I am sure somewhere).
