And I'm not particularly thin skinned either. If someone came up to me when OCing (which I have a couple times), I would try to answer their questions. Unless they were one of the rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth anti-gun nutters.

Absolutely!

Frankly, I don't want to live in a town/city/state/nation/world where it is not okay to strike up a conversation about a particular way a guy is carrying his pistol, or where'd you get that hat, or lovely weather today, or whatever. What kind of effed up world would that be to live in?

How else do you get the non-gun nuts interested/educated, and so on?

Absolutely, had it been me, I would have taken a second to educate the questioner. Admittedly, the OP was not comfortable because he was never educated on the subject matter. That's the problem with this society with of gun fearing individuals is that they are afraid of what they do not understand. We as 2a supporters should be happy to share and help educate and be able to articulate why it is important. If we are snooty you may be skipping an opportunity to improve the culture.

IN A NUTSHELL!!!!

Well said! Frankly, if we want it to get better, it is our responsibility. No one else's.

Meh. Maybe. Maybe if the question was posed in a different manner in a less public setting.

"Excuse me, but I noticed your pistol is cocked. Could you tell me more about that carry method?" Instead of a fearful "is that cocked" in a checkout lane.

One should refrain from calling out a complete stranger in public when you aren't up to date with the subject matter.
Like the guy who called me out at the checkout line when I was buying a 12 pack of beer to take home while I was carrying open. He loudly asked "excuse me sire, whats the policy on buying alcohol while carrying a gun"? "I have a CC permit too".
I replied, "same as buying a gallon of milk while carrying, and there is no "policy", its state law son".

I wanted to say: "Also, there is no such CC permit in OK, its an SDA permit and if you have an SDA permit, you should already know the law but since you obviously dont, maybe you should educate yourself on its laws from a better source than asking a stranger in the checkout line at the C store".

We are all different. It wouldn't have bothered me a bit, but then I talk to everyone. My boys are the same way (apple, tree, yadda yadda). I could see it being weird or off putting to some guys. Not this guy!

I think THIS is actually what sums it up. Unless the person is actively creating an unsafe situation, why would you find it behooves you to pull the guy aside and deride him for his choices. If you don't like it, move on. (BTW: SMS, this comment was directed at OP, not you.)

Loaded, cocked and locked, every time. If there's a safety, it's on. Trigger is always covered by holster.

I agree, you made yourself look silly and uneducated in public. It was obvious that you were concerned about something that is standard practice and is extremely safe - consider the millions of Americans who carry concealed or open every single day in this country, and then consider how few incidents there are related to that carrying. It is minuscule. Consider how many "training accidents" we see/hear about in the military - and there are way, way fewer military personnel than Americans who carry for self-defense daily. And even fewer of those military carry firearms regularly - most people in the military aren't on the sharp end, they're paper-pushers or support staff of one kind or another.

Well I'll be damned...I always thought you seemed to be a decent sort of guy until you posted the above statement about "most people in the military aren't on the sharp end." Since there are no longer clear-cut lines of battle, that young paper-pusher or support staff of one kind or the other are just as likely to be blown to hell by an IED as anyone else serving. Your post was in poor taste, IMO. But hey, it wouldn't be the first time here on OSA I got into a pissin' contest with someone who is not military but likes to make claims and statements about those who have worn or are wearing a uniform.

Thanks to all who responded.
Some clarification:
I'm not familiar with all modern firearms, My interests lie in historical and black powder firearms. Many of those don't even have safeties!
The gun in question wasn't a 1911, which I am familiar with.
I wasn't challenging him. I was asking a question, as I did when I began this post.
Based on my limited knowledge, I suspected that the gun in question was being carried in an unsafe manner. I don't have a problem with open carry. I do have a problem with a gun being carried unsafely.
Based on what some of you have said, certain guns CAN be carried safely while cocked. Is this correct?
Thanks,
Rick
