Buy it cheap and stack it deep. We are going to have President elect Hillary by next Christmas.
I bought a slew of foliage pmags for $8 and some change each. Spent $535 to my ffl for a bushmaster patrolman. After $200 mail in rebate of course

I wouldn't want to spend over $1000 right now! Looking for a decent base model and build from there!

If you show up at Fat Boy Tactical with a $1000 budget, you're going to go home with a helluva nice set up, much nicer than anything you can buy off of the shelf. If you want a basic high quality carbine and want to spend that kind of money, take a look at BCM.

Do a little research on AR15.com then decide what style AR you want. I have had 3 ARs and I decided I wanted one that was basically like a Mil-spec M4 with a 16" barrlel, but I wanted folding sights to keep a low profile and not get in the way of optics. Most of the hardcore AR builders have pretty good things to say about Palmetto State Armory, just don't buy their cheaper PTAC line. So I bought a PSA Classic lower Blem for $149 shipped (I saw no Blems whatsoever) and I bought an Anderson "Optics ready" (low lubrication) upper with BCG for $299 shipped so I snapped the two together and the finish was a perfect match. Installed a 2-7X Redfield on a Nikon mount and its very accurate and perfectly reliable and I'm quite happy with it. I might recommend a Magpul sliding stock though, because the Military M4 stocks rattle a little.

Seriously you can buy a brand new Colt for less than $1k

If you want to save some money a S&W and other ARs are $650 all day long

If you want to save more you can buy a completely assembled Anderson lower at FBT with stock for $149 and a complete upper for ~$300

There are so many ways the sky is the limit. At the very least get your lower locked in so you can at least do the build when you want. That can be had for as low as $39.

I was once a total gun snob but the more I understand and look the more I think someday I will regret not buying more Anderson lowers at $39. It really comes down to the rollmark being the only difference in anything forged made from T6 7075 aluminum. If you are going to spend extra somewhere make it the BCG and Barrel. Good luck.

Yes, it is definitely time to buy. Like Dennis said, they won't be cheaper than this. You might even catch a Christmas sale right now. You have pretty general use requirements -- the cheaper complete rifles like that DPMS (or the Smith or the Ruger) would probably do what you want just fine. However, you could get more features and quality for your money by putting one together. Usually this means putting starting from a stripped lower and individual parts, but it could be as simple as buying a complete lower and a complete upper and pushing in a couple of takedown pins. The upper is where most of the gun is. It might be worth your while to look around at some complete uppers, do a little research on features and materials, and see if there is anything that strikes your fancy. Palmetto has some good stuff, and Fat Boy Tactical has some nice stuff that you could look at here locally.
