When my dad first taught me to shoot at the age of 7, I had real trouble lining up the sights even though I understood the concept of the sight picture. Turns up I'm left-eye dominant and was trying to shoot right handed. Doesn't work. Check his eye dominance and see if that's his problem. You can do this at home pretty easily.

Have him hold both hands out at arms length and make a triangle with his thumbs and forefingers and look at you through the triangle. While he stays focused on you through the triangle, have him bring his hands back until they are touching his face. At this point, he should have the triangle around one of his eyes, and the other eye will be covered up with one of his hands. Whichever eye is in the triangle is his dominant eye. If it turns out to be the left eye, move the gun to his left shoulder and teach him to shoot from there instead. It will be awkward at first, but he'll get used to it.

I just did this with my wife. (new gun owner) With me, it came back right eye. With her, it came back to center each time. I didn't tell her why this was being done.
Next question. If finding a right hand shooter that is left eye dominate, how does one get the shooter get the proper sight picture?

Shoot left handed, but some scotch tape on the left eye glass to "weaken" it, rotate the gun slightly left gangsta style, close the left eye. Lots of different ways.

I am left eye dominant, right handed mostly

I shoot shotguns left handed, rifles depends on which way the shot sets up, handguns strongly prefer right handed mostly do to hand strength being greater in that hand. shoot shotguns much, much better than anything else. Can hit 25 birds in a row, but will be able to shoot a 4" clay maybe 50 percent of the time at 10 yards with a Glock 19

As BobBarker says, you can either shoot left-handed or block off the left side of their shooting glasses and force them to use the right eye. Of course, that latter option depends on what their vision is in each eye. In my case, my right eye works just well enough to give me depth perception and peripheral vision, but it won't focus on anything, even with corrective lenses, so I just can't use it to shoot. That left me with only shooting off the left shoulder.

With handguns, it's not too tough to get the gun far enough over to shoot it right handed but left-eyed. In fact, that's how I shoot handguns 90% of the time, though I do practice some left-handed shooting with them, too. Tougher to do that with a rifle or shotgun.

Since your wife comes back to center, she may not really have a dominant eye. Whichever side she shoots from, she may wind up trying to close one eye to get her sight picture. If she does this, pay attention to which eye she's closing and which she's leaving open. Whichever one she's leaving open is the dominant one, even if only slightly.

I know a deputy sheriff lady that never shot a rifle.. Her first was My savage .308 It was odd seeing her handle it.
I was asking what she was doing and she said she is left eye dominate. And right handed.
I had the gun set on the hood of a truck with a front bag (welcome to Oklahoma)
Anyway she finally closed that left eye and just used the right eye.

She out shot her husband who is also in law enforcement. And he has shot many rifles. Fun day.
