Stihl is definitely a great saw. I've owned both Stihl and Husqvarna and the Husky is a very good saw also. I wrote up a whole paragraph on my opinion, but bottom line is: get a Stihl, Husqvarna, or I suspect an Echo, but don't overdo it and buy more than what you need. The big ones are typically a lot more powerful than you need and are HEAVY at the end of the day. Some brands make a "professional" saw and a "hobby" saw. You would have a lot better satisfaction with the "professional" grade over the coming years.

I run Echo, a 440 and a 540. I have trouble using the little one on large trees. I also have an Echo pole trimmer. all are very good. I just wanted to say that any brand you buy should be bought from a servicing dealer. I found that one dealer I bought from didn,t know how to service the small two stroke engines. I was using him to service my lawn mowers and just assumed that he could service the small stuff. I have found a servicing dealer and he now gets all my business. Echo has dealers (non servicing) and servicing dealers listed on their web site.

Looking for an 18 inch saw, to be used for light work around the house and maybe cut a rick of wood a summer.

Want something that starts easy and will last until I die. (Meaning not a craftsman).

Also, best place to buy?

This chainsaw can be found on the same isle as the fountain of youth, the holy grail and the dutchman's gold.

I'm not a Stihl fan. Like their weed eaters and leaf blowers but I prefer husquvarna or echo chain saws. You said you wanted one that starts easy and every Stihl I've ever been around was a royal pain to get started and keep running. The ranch us a farm boss and when I need a chainsaw I reach for my personal echo super easy to start and runs like a top. Plenty of power and has cut lots of firewood and is excellent to use for trimming and clearing brush .

Sent from NSA wire tapped device.

After reading this thread I got a Stihl MS180 ES-Start, A.K.A., girly start. Have had it for about a month. When warm it starts with a 10-12" pull on the, literally, first try every-time. Every-time. When cold it takes, at most, 3 pulls. Starting is always the number one concern of mine when getting a small engine tool. I've been pleasantly surprised by the Stihl.

Learning how to maintain you're chainsaw or any other occasionally used small gas powered engine is far more important than the brand chosen.

I have a corded Remington electric saw with a 10" bar for doing light work around the house. It can be used hand held or on a telescoping pole. I'd prefer it on any average day over dealing with a gas chainsaw for light and occasional work around the house. It's not that noisy, you don't have to deal with mixing fuel, exhaust fumes and you can use 30w motor oil to lube the chain. Stihl makes an corded electric saw that will accept a 12"-16" bar. I'd probably consider one if I needed to do larger cutting jobs around the house.

I have a 25" Stihl and an 18" Echo. Both are great saws. We use the Echo for light duty and the stihl for the big stuff. The Stihl has never had any issues and has plenty of power. The Echo has never had any issues but can bog down a bit in a big log cut.
