I have my wife and her mother in the kitchen talking about growing up and all kinds of other things like family tend to do. Meanwhile I have been trying to plan my drive to Phoenix and then over to the people's republic for a couple weeks to help my father with his floor and cabinets. I did manage to not have to pick my step daughter up and bring her back with me so there I get to save about 3000 miles of driving but I still have to take the dog with me.

I just finished up a small FreeNAS so that my step daughter in Phoenix will have access to a Plex and some stuff to watch as well as a VPN connection so I can handle any repairs. Meanwhile I have been TRYING to get my router up and running without any hitches. Using pfSense and setup Snort for filtering out all the crap since IPV6 is up and running Squid so I can save a little bandwidth with three adults each with a computer as well as three phones and three tablets not to mention the FreeNAS and finally pfBlockerNG to filter out the ad servers to save a little more bandwidth and prevent all the Malvertising from making it through along with "Windows telemetry". Figuring out exactly how to setup Snort has been a PAIN and some weird problems seem to pop up every now and then, at one point some sort of incorrect http_inspect no length error from OKshooters was even killing my access here. Hopefully everything is up and running well enough to not have any problems when I leave in a couple days.

I need a vacation... And sadly where I am going I am not likely to get it.

Lol. I can size for and sell enterprise hardware all day long, but setting anything up is completely outside my comfort zone.

I keep telling myself that I'll setup a NAS on my home network, but haven't even been able to try yet. I'll definitely be asking questions when I do.

How do you keep your modem IP from changing occasionally to keep your remote access? The ISP's I'm familiar with all use DHCP unless you pay for a static IP.

Every so often I have to reconfigure my router's remote access IP since my modem IP will change every few weeks.

I use https://freedns.afraid.org/ and then put a script in my FreeNAS cron to update the IP every so often. It gives me a subdomain off of one of their free ones. I then have a cname set to forward one of my subdomains to it.

Some routers have dynamic dns service stuff in them but a lot of the ones that used to be free went to a paid version. If you can setup a cron to run on a *nix device to update or have your router flashed to different firmware that has other providers available. But then I do everything via hostname and since the box that will be at my stepdaughters will be FreeBSD based I already have a cron up and ready, just have to put in the port forward.

Did I mention I am a major geek? I enjoy jokes like:

There is no place like 127.0.0.1

There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don’t.

Dynamic DNS has gotten pretty reliable for resolving DHCP addresses to hostnames. I use dyn.com and pay a small fee every year, but there are a buttload of free ones out there. In general, the ones you pay for are better than free, but it will be cheaper than buying a static IP from your ISP.
