I forgot to say it's hard to go wrong with a basic color -- black, navy blue (my personal favorite), dark grey -- and black shoes -- nothing like a sharp dressed man ...

I don't remember who said it but you really do need to get 2 pairs of slacks for each jacket you buy. You will thank him later if you take his advice.

Just my 2cents:

1. All season navy wool suit....2 button...never the bottom button....black, blue, grey/silverfish.

2.The Spring-Summer Khaki Cotton Suit....Italian cotton. This depends on your body build and skin color if it looks good on you.

3.The Grey Flannel Suit

4.Skip the double breasted.

3 basics....black, blue, gray.....BUT...put the jacket on or if your getting it made, the fabric on your arm or next to your face. What YOU may think is a great color may not go with your size, body build, and skin tone.

**Same with ties...put it up nest to you AND your suit or jacket.***

If you buy a cotton or wool blend from a warehouse or outlet, I highly recommend having the suit dry-cleaned immediately, and discard the original plastic covering.

A friend bought one from a well-known warehouse chain in Texas, hung it in his closet with the protective plastic cover still on, and it was moth-eaten when he took it out (none of his other suits were).

Just a thought. ;)

If you're looking for the basic "all occasion" suit, I'd recommend a solid in navy or charcoal. Two button and as others said, NEVER button the bottom button. It will emphasize the v taper you've been working on, and if you still have some work to get to the "v", it elongates the look of your torso.

Solid color suit will allow you to have some fun with patterns on your shirts and ties. You can mix patterns on all three, but do so at your own risk.

And as several have pointed out, get it tailored. A good tailor can make a good quality suit look great on you.

Does the place where you purchase the suit do tailoring? That's what I remember, it's been a while...

Generally, you get what you pay for when it comes to in house tailoring. Can't stress this enough. A good Tailor can make a "cheaper" suit look like a $1000-1500+ suit. If you just need a few adjustments then no bid deal. One the issues from going to the gym is that a lot of suits don't have jackets built for guys with arms, chest or shoulders. You then usually have to buy something larger in the jacket and have it taken in considerably. The problem is that you now look like you have shoulder pads with indentions hanging off the shoulder.

DO NOT buy a suit where the shoulders and arms don't fit perfectly. You will waste money in the long run if you do.

Another thing to consider is smaller (higher-bottom) arm holes. A lot of off-the-rack suits have big arm holes that make it easier to get the jacket on and off, but cause the whole jacket to rise if you lift your arms. Tighter arm holes let you raise your arms without lifting the body of the jacket.

Go watch an early (Connery) James Bond movie and see how little his jacket lifts when he moves his arms.
