Im guessing that it isn't possible to have wired system and be able to view from a cell phone correct? I really don't want to add more wireless to my router but would like the ability to view it in real time.

In order for me to see my CCTV it must be sent to the router, sorry. But it is nice to be able to operate the system from a smart phone.

Wireless cameras are subject to possible hijacking from someone with enough know-how and determination. None of them are hack-proof. I don't have security cameras, but one day I will, with a robust DVR, on a fiber-based home system.

Until then... well... I do the best I can.

On my camera system the only time it is hooked to the router is when we are not in the house. That is just to keep the online time down to a minimum.

Honestly not much need for online use when I am sitting at the controls. :)

I see. I didn't think about unhooking it from online when we are there. We are outside a lot so Im sure that would cause a lot of footage of us in the yard.

Im looking at an Amcrest system and it says that it doesn't come with a HDD but does have USB backup so does that mean it will store all the motion detection video on the USB? I looked at some awhile back and they had HDD but it looks they have changed since then.

I just installed this one last weekend

So far it’s been awesome, had to have power run into a closet but I ran the rest of the wires myself.

I'm pretty happy with my Reolink system. Hardware has worked flawless. Software could use some more stability. This is the only camera system I've used so I can't compare it to anything.

Running the wires is a pain but worth it in the long run. If you run wires for this you might as well run cat5e to your whole house while you're at it.

I believe a wired connection is the way of the future. Network demands will only increase as streaming video becomes more common. Just wire your house now and get it over with. Plus you can have some cool cameras to watch.

Oh ya here are a few videos from my cameras. Night Shot Day Shot

The elcheapo one I use allows for "timed recording" or "cover shots". On the timed part you can set the DVR to not record on any camera at any given time, so if you want to do anything in the yard you dont want recorded you just set the timer. :) So if you plan on being out and do not want recorded on Saturday morning from 9am until 1pm you just set the timer, or any time as you want.

The cover shots, you just take a snapshot with the camera and can place it over an area that you do not want recorded, but the rest of the picture will be.

The DVR will just record over old footage, so having them run 24/7 is not a big deal.

I just saved some night vids from mine so the sheriff can come look at the guy and if they want they can have a copy. It is simple just stick a flash drive in and select the part you want and click save with the mouse. Now I have a copy in the computer and still on the flash drive.

The system I an on now was a whopping $99 and will run 8 cameras, it came with 4. My other system had a power surge sent into it after 4 years of use and it no longer functions, the surge took out several items. Oh this did not come with a HDD, but had everything else in the kit to set up 4 cameras. A set of 4 cameras of higher quality and the lines, power supply and mounting can be had for about $75. Or complete 8 camera system for as little as $200 to what ever you feel like spedning. Mine works fine and even at night they do all I need.

My system is wired through a POE switch. It’s hooked up all the time. The windows machine acts as the server. It isn’t sending any info anywhere over the internet unless I am requesting it from the app. It is password protected. The server keeps footage for a default of 7 days or until my HDD is full. That setting can be changed. It records only when enough pixels change (motion). It doesn’t take too much storage space even with 8 cameras, one being a full 4K.

Evidently I can't use a wired system. We have had two alarm companies come out, look over our home over, and leave, never to call back.
I now have unlimited wifi although it's not blazing fast, but it's there.

Thanks for the wink review Bryandp! Just ruled that one out.

I have Ring in addition to my POE system. The ring is really handy. The motion alerts are great. My home automation system also has alerts that can send me text message notifications and/or emails.
Do you have the ring doorbell, or the ring floodlight system? How good is the video?
Can you make out a tag number at 30' or so?
I acknowledge wireless can be hacked, but living in the country, I have only one way in, and one way out and if sombody wants to hack into a video of my driveway that has a lot of deer and turkey traffic, have at it.
I just want something that has good video and text alerts that I can see through my Iphone.
