The best part of AR's are how customizable they are.... you can actually build or find something that will work across a wide range of "wants" or scenario's. What do you want from a hunting rifle... distances you will ACTUALLY be shooting compared to what you might want to shoot... I always started by defining my needs. Then pick a caliber. From there you pick you platform and pick all the accessories whether functional reasons or not and just put it together/buy one.

I've finally built out my dream rifle, fully customized even down to the coatings and patterns. Finally reduced my ar inventory to just 2 ar rifles... one for hunting and one for long range target shooting. If you like to chat, let me know.

Awesome advise! I am really starting dig the idea of building as for the reasons stated. Now being a complete novice, when I look at these kits, I get lost in the "uppers, lowers, etc." Can anyone suggest a kit, for a beginner builder, that is complete, or maybe 2 kits that will combine to make a complete, good quality ready to shoot gun?

The 3 most popular patterns for the AR10 are the Armilite AR10, M110 (KAC), and the DPMS Gen 2 (AKA Small Frame 308 pattern) pattern. THe later has become the most popular by far, with 90% of the receiver parts being compatible with the AR15.

For being inexpensive but having good quality, id Go with the Aero M5 receivers, upper and lower

I like the Armilite AR10, but that being said the DPMS AR10 is sold more, because of the price and more compatible parts. We carry DPMS lower receiver parts kits, buffers and buffer springs. The stock is the same as an AR15 stock, but the AR10 has different buffers and buffer springs. Hope this helps.

+1 for Aero. I have a 308 (DPMS pattern) built on an Aero lower. Accurate and reliable. I also have an AR pistol in 300 Blackout, all built with Aero parts. If you will go to the Aero website, they have a lot of items on sale right now. You can buy a complete rifle, an upper and lower separately, or start buying parts and piece it out over a few months to soften the hit to your budget. All depends on what you want and how fast you want it.
