I have never spent money on a cat.
Wife made me do it with a few dogs.
I used to just give them 7 in 1 shots when they were off the mothers milk and kept that regimen going for a few months until they were good to go.
Over the counter wormer Or Ivomec is all they ever got.
Break a leg. Tuff crap.. you will be limping feeling ill I will change the diet and baby them a little but NO Vet.

I am kind of glad I do not have any pets.. just chickens.
I hate to see pets die.. harder than people dying sometimes. I do not need that.

A chicken though..care less if it dies.. in fact if it gets lazy it will do just that and go into a pressure cooker.

REAL men do :p

Cats are awesome. They're pretty much independent, travel well, can be left home for long periods of time and dont eat much. ... I like dogs but they are a much bigger commitment, and the ones I would like are harder to travel with.

I had dogs for years, and have a cat now. There's so much truth to what you said. The cat... we he likes us. He'll come up and greet me and say hello, get his head rubbed and stuff every so often, especially when he comes in after dusk to wind down for the night. But he just isn't so needy as the dogs. He's friendly but just not super social. He doesn't need the affirmation or entertainment. I was never a cat person but this dude has grown on me.

He stays plenty busy independently doing his own thing. He uses out dog door to go in and out, he keeps the squirrels out of the pecan tree. He located and notified me of the mice in my water heater cabinet so I could trap them all. He keeps the big stray tom out of the yard. He's a buddy with the next door car and the two of them roll around an play together. He's not a huge recreational killer like some cats are but, I have watched him opportunistically get a rabbit, a couple birds (mourning doves), and a mouse. It's pretty amazing to see them work.

He eats little, even being a 16 pound cat (he's not obese, just a big tabby). He has a litter box but typically goes outside so it's low maintenance. He's a short hair so he sheds less than our dogs even did. We don't have to board him, as our neighbor or family can feed him when we're out.

Truthfully he is about 90% less work than the dogs that we had. The commitment is there as they can live 20 years, but they require so much less pro-active care than the pups. I love the dogs, no doubt. But cats are pretty cool little creatures.
