Perhaps I should have said "brassless" then ... but IIRC, they were called "caseless" when the idea first appeared a while back. But maybe not.

I wonder how it holds the bullet in place when chambering, and whether that support system would be reusable? :anyone:
Start at 1.25 minutes and it shows the cycling of the ammo on the MG. The rifle works same way except from a box magazine

Military has dreamed this for years I worked on project in 72-73 with caseless 7.62 had lots of problems main goal was for aircraft it was totally caseless and they were looking to carry more rounds, nothing but links to discharge. Caseless had no powder explosives were gelled and surrounded the round.

Several billion dollars in research, endless modifications, contracts issued, guns don't work in real world, military won't give up and billions more spent. Finally the Nato 5.56 is reissued.

(NGSAR) Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle

U.S. Army’s Next Rifle Fires at Pressure Equivalent to a Tank
AWR Hawkins 12 Dec 2018

..."Task and Purpose quotes Col. Geoffrey A. Norman saying, “The chamber pressure for the standard assault rifle is around 45 KSI [kilopound per square inch], but we’re looking for between 60 and 80 KSI … the chamber pressure when an M1 Abrams tank fires is on that order.”

Norman added, “We’re looking to reach out around 600 meters and have lethal effects even if the target is protected by body armor.”

The weapon, dubbed the Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle (NGSAR), is part of the Next Generation Weapons System and the goal is to have it ready for battle by 2022."...

What has ended up happening is with aircraft the ceaseless ammo would cause issues with balance. Every fixed wing aircraft that I know of that carries a gun fires the ammo, and then circulates the links and cases back into the aircraft for storage, to help offset the loss of weight. The A10 is an example of this.
