I'd restore 2A rights if they are completely off probation etc. We have people that can't carry because they bounced a check eons ago. That's dumb.
Yep. Once you've fully paid your debt to society, you shouldn't have to keep on paying for the rest of your life. Once your prison term is completed (meaning, if you're sentenced to 20 years, 20 years from your sentencing date, even if you get released for good behavior after 15), and once you've completed any and all other parts of your sentence (restitution, community service, etc), bingo, your full rights as a citizen are restored. You can vote, own a gun, run for Congress, whatever.

FWIW, it used to be the law (in Texas, IIRC) that once a man got out of prison, he was given a horse, a $20 gold piece, and a rifle, all so he could have a chance to start a new life. That's really not a bad philosophy....

I wouldn't be surprised if someone tried it, but I don't expect it to fly. Paying the restitution isn't attached to the restoration of voting rights, it's attached to the penalty for the crime you committed. Until you complete the restitution, you have not paid the penalty for your crime.
Agree 1000%. You ain't done your time until you reimburse those that you caused loss to. Steal their stuff, you pay. Burn their stuff, you pay.
We have a nephew that has thousands in restitution and court fees that he hasn't paid after his release and he doesn't understand why there are warrants out for his arrest right now.
If he ever shows up at my house, there will be a call to 911.
He was guilty of theft of oilfield property, Criminal maiming of an individual that lost an eye, and multitudes of drug trafficking. Yeah, he is a POS, and doesn't deserve the right to vote for anybody.
Some people in this thread think that everybody is just a good boy that had a bad day and needs a break. If your not a career criminal when going in, you will be coming out.

Yeah but not all felonies have victims and some people receive outrageous fines. What you're saying really only makes sense for civil court.
