I hadn't seen a shooter buck from stand all year. Today I said to myself I will get down from my stand at 9:45 am. I had stuff to do midday.

8:10 I see a yearling forky or maybe small six. Pass him at 40 yds. He's cruising, sniffing the ground. It's kinda windy and it's been a grind lately. 9:38 I say screw it and climb down. Get to the ground and realize when I delayered I hung my blaze vest in my tree above my head. I lean my rifle on a tree and head back up. Grab the vest and start down the first step. I look over and of course a decent shooter is nose to the ground right where the yearling buck walked 1hr earlier. My heart drops and I scurry down the tree towards my gun. Wish I could give a good ending to this story but once on the ground I can't see where he would be. I grab the gun and fly up the tree, nada. I hear him blow at me a few mins later.

a.) not my year
b.) never get down until exactly the time you set for yourself. getting down 7 minutes early changed my whole season. it's nuts how many all day sits you can do and not see a shooter, then that happens the last 7 minutes you are rifle hunting. ah well. he was big but not huge. maybe he will be next year. if he was huge I would probably be buying golf clubs tomorrow with my pawned rifle and bow money.

I have to fly to Chicago for work tomorrow so I didn’t go out this evening, thinking I would get stuff done at home. My son in law is taking finals online, so he didn’t go out. Then, a little after 5:00, the land owner is working ground and texts, “Who is sitting in these two pop ups?”

WTF???!!!

He starts driving the tractor toward them and they bail out, pack the blinds and take off running. I was on site in less than 10 mins, as was my son in law. No sign of them.

We are out there so much that they must know our vehicles and knew we were not there tonight. Awfully freakin bold!

Oh, and my brother in law found a set of rattling antlers hanging in a tree near his primary stand. Looks like they may be using our stands to hunt in. With 7 cameras on the place, you’d think we would have caught a picture of them.

I already have the game warden on alert for road hunters, so these trespassing bastards better hope I don’t catch them out there.
