You need a plan when you go to war but it changes as you go. Be careful when criticizing the generals, using the benefit of hindsight.
Also, watch out not to conflate public health benefits or measures with individual health benefits or measures....I think that is part of the apparent conflict in different statements made by the CDC Director.
I do not envy any administrator trying to make public statements in a changing situation with a public that craves certainty.

The political head of the CDC says he trusts masks more than the vaccine, while the scientist of the CDC say masks to not protect the wearer.
Who do we follow? The Politicians or the science?
I know I'm always the one to question the politicians and "science" when it's driven by politics to achieve an agenda.
So who do we believe in this situation?
I recently posted in the Carona thread that the WHO has back peddled by now saying lockdowns are not necessary and are actually harmful While WAPO is now bragging on how well the President did keeping the virus under control after months of trashing him.
What has changed to cause all of this back peddling? It's obviously something "scientific" that will counter the narrative the politicians are spewing? Is that it?

CDC study: 85% of COVID-19 cases in July were people who often or always wear masks

A survey conducted by over a dozen medical institutions for the CDC and published in Sept. 11's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report showed that 85% of those who contracted COVID-19 during July among the study group either "always" or "often" wore face coverings within the 14 days before they were infected. More than 70% of those outpatient individuals who tested positive reported always wearing masks. Just 3.9% reported never wearing a mask.
