You guys were the lucky ones, when I was kid we made all of our toys, sling shots, bows and arrows, telephones with a tin can and fishing line stretched across two yards so we could communicate with our friends, mirrors that we'd signal to the other kids with. We'd climb trees and grab a limb and spring to the ground unit lit snapped. Those were the days before cheap Chinese toys that only last Christmas morning. Did I say Christmas? I remember one Christmas my brother and I got a cheap coping saw and awl as presents wit a couple of oranges. I'm sure some of you received similar Christmas holidays of remembrance.

Growing up in the country...these were my gifts-NOT toys on Christmas over the years. About 7-13 years of age...BEST Christmas gifts(not toys) EVER!!! *** The thing about "Santa" is that even at an early age I just didn't believe in him, knew it was my parents, and wasn't real excited about "Santa". BUT-I woke up early on Christmas and ran at the speed of light(299,792 kilometers per second or 670,616,629 miles per hour) to the Christmas tree to open presents. I was getting up at about the time my parents were going to sleep from wrapping presents and getting Christmas food ready.

**I never really wanted "toys" but genuine-real-goodness to honest fun things to use and have living in a very rural area***

Not new at the time but new to me and a "starter gun" at 7yrs old.

That fits my childhood almost to a T, sears mini bike, 129 bucks, then the XR 75.. Marched around the woods with the 22 or Ithaca single 20.. Did ya know you can put thousands of rounds of 22 thru a hockey puck..

I remember one Christmas when I was about 11 or 12. We lived in a very old, drafty, colder than a.....well, cold house. The parents came to us and said we had a choice --- a 9" B&W TV each for our rooms, or carpeting for the floor. We both chose carpet! Best Christmas present ever!!! I bet it added at least 10* to 15* in the temperature, plus no frostbite on the feet.

Dad's uncle came to live with us when I was 9, and I was allowed to hunt with his single-shot .410 when I was 10 or 11. I then received a Stevens .410 bolt-action for Christmas when I was 13 (the only firearm my parents ever bought for me). It currently hangs over our front door.

Dad had cattle, and wouldn't let any of us boys have a .22 until we were 14 because of the range. His reasoning was that a shotgun lost power much closer to the shooter, and he was worried about the livestock.

So... I saved up for my first .22 (a Remington "Fieldmaster" pump) when I was 14 (still have it), and my first handgun (a Kimel .22/.22mag SA revolver) at 16, along with my first 30-06 (Remington bolt-action). Sadly... I sold the Kimel, and traded the .30-06 for a transmission jack for my shop.

My nephew (a year younger than I) got a mini-bike one year for Christmas and brought it to our house. I fell in love with that thing, but Dad wouldn't let any of us boys have a motorcycle while we were at home. That included mini-bikes. :/

I thought that was horribly cruel, until a friend in Junior high school got himself and his girlfriend killed trying to beat a train on a motorcycle.

The older I got, the smarter Dad became.

Ha, I found ones of those Budwiser lures in an old tackle box out in the garage last fall. Thanks for the memories, I participated in many of these items over the years starting at 7 with a Daisy BB gun, a chemistry set at one time making gunpowder with a fuse to burn as a flare in little beer bottle caps, and on and on. Yep brings back another era. Thanks again.
